Taiwo Awoniyi has received the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) ‘Beyond the Pitch’ Award at the 2026 Best of Africa Awards in London, recognising his community work and support for young footballers in Nigeria.
The Nottingham Forest and Nigeria national team striker was honoured for his contributions beyond professional football, particularly his support for the Kwara Kiddies League, a grassroots competition that gives young players opportunities to develop their football skills.

Awoniyi, who plays as a central striker in the English Premier League, has used his resources to support youth development and community initiatives in Nigeria. His involvement in grassroots football has focused on helping young players access the equipment, opportunities and support they need to pursue the sport.
Through his backing of the Kwara Kiddies League, Awoniyi has helped provide a platform for aspiring footballers in Kwara State. His reported contributions include funding the annual tournament, supplying kits and equipment, and providing cash prizes for participating teams in Ilorin and surrounding communities.
The ‘Beyond the Pitch’ Award recognises footballers whose contributions extend beyond their performances on the field. Presented at the Best of Africa Awards, the honour highlights the role athletes can play in supporting their communities and using their public profiles to draw attention to social causes.
The annual Best of Africa Awards, held in London, celebrates achievements by Africans and people of African heritage across areas including sport, entertainment and social impact. The PFA’s involvement in the award reflects its focus on recognising footballers for their contributions outside the game.

Reacting to the recognition on Instagram, Awoniyi reflected on the importance of using opportunities and resources to make a difference in the lives of others.
“Life can give you so much, but what truly matters is what you choose to do with what you’ve been given. Grateful to receive the PFA Beyond the Pitch Award at the Best of Africa Awards 2026,” he wrote.
The award places further attention on Awoniyi’s work supporting grassroots football in Nigeria, where local competitions can give young players opportunities to develop their abilities and gain experience. His backing of the Kwara Kiddies League reflects an effort to extend his contribution to the sport beyond his professional career in England.
