Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany has been discharged from hospital after suffering a collapse at the club’s training ground last week, with doctors identifying meningeal irritation as the cause of the incident.
The Belgian was taken to hospital after collapsing during a second-team training session at Bayern’s training ground on Friday. His condition prompted concern at the German club, although no date has been set for his return to full coaching duties.

Kompany had also missed media commitments ahead of Bayern’s UEFA Champions League match against Arsenal because of a viral infection. Despite his absence from the pre-match media duties, he was present in the dugout for the match, which ended in a 2-2 draw.
Bayern sporting director Max Eberl provided an update on the coach’s condition ahead of the club’s DFB-Pokal match against Magdeburg, confirming that Kompany had left hospital on Wednesday.
“Given the circumstances, he’s doing well,” Eberl told German broadcaster ARD. “He was discharged from the hospital today. That is the biggest and best news for all of us.”
Eberl said meningeal irritation had caused Kompany’s collapse and explained that the coach would now need rest and medication before returning to work.
“He will now rest and take medication, and I am certain that he will very soon be back on the touchline, operating at 100 per cent,” Eberl said.
However, Bayern have not announced a timetable for Kompany’s return. The club has made clear that his recovery will take priority over his coaching responsibilities and that he must receive medical clearance before resuming his duties.
Assistant coach Aaron Danks reiterated that position after Bayern defeated Magdeburg 6-1 in the German Cup. He said there was no confirmed timeline for Kompany’s return and described his discharge from hospital as a positive development in his recovery.
Danks said Kompany would benefit from being back at home with his family, but stressed that he needed to continue resting and allow himself enough time to recover fully.
“Our doctors will continue to work closely with Vince and at the right moment, he will be back with us once he is fit and healthy to do that, and we look forward to that day,” Danks said.
He added that Bayern’s coaching staff and players would continue their work in the meantime, while the club’s medical team monitored Kompany’s progress.
Danks also indicated that he had not spoken to Kompany for a couple of days and had received no new information suggesting that a return date was close. He said the club remained focused on ensuring that the coach regained his health and fitness before rejoining the team.
The latest update means Kompany has left hospital, but his recovery remains ongoing. Bayern have yet to specify when he will return to the touchline, with the decision dependent on his progress and medical advice.
