Salone del Mobile.Milano made its Nigerian debut at Design Week Lagos 2026, bringing one of the world’s most influential furniture and design exhibitions to Lagos for a meeting of Italian craftsmanship and African creative talent.

The event, held at the National Theatre in Lagos, brought together international design figures, Nigerian architects, interior designers, business leaders and cultural personalities. The participation of the Italian design institution marked a significant moment for the country’s design industry, creating an opportunity for professionals from both regions to exchange ideas, explore creative partnerships and discuss the future of contemporary design.

Leading the Italian delegation were Marco Sabetta, general manager of Salone del Mobile.Milano, and Marva Griffin Wilshire, founder and curator of SaloneSatellite, the platform known for showcasing emerging designers. Their visit highlighted growing interest in connections between Italy’s established design industry and Africa’s expanding community of architects, furniture makers and creative entrepreneurs.

A notable moment came during the inaugural IDEA Honours, where Griffin Wilshire received the Architectural Legacy Honour. The award featured a custom plaque created by Nigerian artist and architect Demas Nwoko, MFR, bringing together international design recognition and Nigerian artistic craftsmanship. Architect Lesley Lokko and artist Yinka Shonibare CBE were also honoured during the programme.

Reflecting on her visit, Griffin Wilshire said Lagos had given the delegation an opportunity to discover emerging African talent and explore ways to help young designers establish themselves internationally. Her remarks underscored one of the event’s central ambitions: to create stronger links between African creativity and the international design market.

The programme also explored the theme “Making a New Africa: From Material to Market”, examining how the continent’s natural materials, cultural heritage and design skills can contribute to wider economic and industrial opportunities. Exhibition tours and panel discussions provided a setting for participants to consider how local creative resources could be developed into commercially viable products with international reach.

Design Week Lagos founder Titi Ogufole emphasized the importance of Africa’s materials, heritage and creative talent in shaping future industrial growth. The theme placed particular attention on the relationship between design and production, highlighting the need to connect creative ideas with manufacturing, investment and access to markets.

Salone del Mobile.Milano’s participation also opened a new avenue for engagement between Nigerian design professionals and the Italian furniture and interiors sector. While the visit does not by itself establish the scale of future commercial partnerships, it provides a platform for dialogue between two creative markets with different traditions, resources and opportunities.

Design Week Lagos 2026 ran through October 25, bringing attention to the city’s growing role in African design and contemporary creative culture. The next major date on the international design calendar is April 2027, when Salone del Mobile.Milano is scheduled to hold its 65th edition in Milan, Italy.
