Robert Lewandowski breaks Ronaldo’s record with Nations League hat-trick

Robert Lewandowski has broken Cristiano Ronaldo’s record as the oldest player to score a hat-trick in the UEFA Nations League after scoring three times in Poland’s 6-0 win over Romania in Warsaw.

The Poland captain found the net in the 24th, 47th and 86th minutes, completing his hat-trick with his third goal late in the match. At 38 years and 42 days old, Lewandowski became the oldest player to score three goals in a single Nations League match.

The previous record belonged to Ronaldo, who was 34 years and 120 days old when he scored a hat-trick for Portugal against Switzerland in the 2019 Nations League semi-final. Lewandowski has now moved four years beyond that mark.

His performance against Romania added another milestone to an already remarkable international career. The match was Lewandowski’s 170th appearance for Poland, extending his record as the country’s most-capped player.

The three goals also moved his international tally to 92. He remains one of the most prolific goalscorers in international football, and his latest performance showed that age has done little to reduce his ability to decide matches in front of goal.

Lewandowski’s first goal came in the 24th minute, before he struck again shortly after the start of the second half. He completed the hat-trick in the 86th minute as Poland finished a dominant night with six goals against Romania.

The result gave Lewandowski another landmark to add to his long international career, while his hat-trick established a new Nations League age record that had previously been held by one of the game’s most prolific goalscorers.
