Utah mother raises privacy concerns after Meta AI surfaces details about her young daughters
Meta AI privacy concerns have been raised by a Utah mother who says the artificial intelligence tool surfaced personal information about her two young daughters and appeared to try to determine where her family lives.

Kalie Robins said the incident began innocently when she posted a video of herself singing in a car with one of her daughters. After the video was also shared on Facebook, Meta AI generated a suggested question asking, “Who’s the child passenger?”

Robins said she clicked on the suggestion out of curiosity. What followed, she said, was far more personal than she expected. The AI provided information about both of her daughters, including their names, birth details, photographs and videos that had appeared in older posts shared by Robins and other family members.

The experience became more troubling when Robins said the system also produced a photograph she had deleted several years earlier. There is no independent evidence establishing where that particular image came from, but the incident nevertheless left her questioning how much information about her children could be surfaced through Meta’s AI tools.

Robins said the interaction then took another turn. Meta AI suggested that she ask, “Where does Kalie Robins live?” When she followed the prompt, she said the system displayed a message stating that it was “Pinpointing Kalie Robins’ location.”

For Robins, the concern was not simply that an AI system could identify information already associated with her family online. The more unsettling part was that the tool itself appeared to guide the conversation toward increasingly personal information, including the family’s location.

The incident has prompted Robins to reconsider how she shares photographs and videos of her children online. Like many parents, she had posted family moments over time, without necessarily expecting those posts to be brought together and presented through an AI conversation in this way.

Meta acknowledged that the system had “missed the mark” and said it should not have suggested questions about the minor. The company said the issue had been fixed.

Meta also said its AI responses are based on information the user already has access to, including public information and other accessible content. That explanation is central to the company’s position, but it does not remove the privacy concern raised by the incident. The question for parents is not only what information is technically available online, but also how easily an AI system can connect pieces of that information and present them in response to a simple prompt.

The episode illustrates a growing tension surrounding AI-powered features on social media platforms. Information that may have been scattered across years of posts can become much easier to discover when an AI system is able to interpret and connect publicly accessible material.

For parents, that raises a difficult question about the long-term consequences of sharing identifiable images and personal details about children online. A photograph posted years ago may seem insignificant at the time, but its potential visibility can change as the technology used to search, interpret and connect online information becomes more sophisticated.

Robins’ experience does not establish that Meta AI accessed private information or that it independently obtained material that had been removed from Facebook. Those questions would require evidence beyond the account of the incident. What it does show is how an unexpected AI interaction can make parents reconsider the amount of personal information about their children that remains discoverable online.

For Robins, that realization has already changed how she thinks about posting her daughters’ images. The incident serves as a reminder that once personal information is shared online, its future use and discoverability may be difficult for individuals to fully control.
