Ice Hotels in Europe: Five Snow and Igloo Stays to Book This Winter

0
Ice hotels in Europe offer travellers a different way to experience winter, with hand-carved ice bedrooms, snow-built suites and frozen sculptures replacing the familiar comforts of a conventional hotel. From Swedish and Finnish Lapland to northern Norway and the Swiss Alps, these unusual properties give visitors the chance to sleep inside structures made from ice and snow while exploring some of the continent’s coldest destinations.

Many of these hotels are temporary creations, rebuilt each winter using ice harvested from nearby rivers and lakes or snow collected for construction. Their rooms are often designed by sculptors, making the accommodation as much an artistic experience as an overnight stay. While indoor temperatures can fall well below freezing, thermal sleeping bags and access to heated facilities help guests prepare for the cold.

For travellers planning a winter escape, five ice hotels in Europe stand out for their distinctive designs, seasonal experiences and locations.

In northern Norway, Snowhotel 365 at Snow Resort Kirkenes, near Bjørnevatn, offers an ice hotel experience throughout the year. Each room is hand-carved by international ice sculptors, so the designs differ from one room to another.

Temperatures inside the rooms remain around -4C. Guests are provided with thermal sleeping bags and have access to a heated lounge, sauna and showers. The stay also includes breakfast and a three-course dinner, according to the property’s accommodation offering.

Unlike seasonal ice hotels that close when temperatures rise, Snowhotel 365 maintains its frozen environment even during summer. The property uses approximately 30 tonnes of ice and fresh snow each year to preserve and renew its structures. As the snow gradually hardens into ice, the walls, ceilings and sculptures develop changing textures and shapes.

ICEHOTEL

In Swedish Lapland, ICEHOTEL in Jukkasjarvi takes a different approach by creating a new seasonal hotel from ice sourced from the Torne River. Each winter, artists and sculptors from around the world contribute designs that transform the frozen material into individual rooms, suites and artworks.

The seasonal ice accommodation generally opens in December and remains available for around five months before the structures melt back into the river. Temperatures inside the ice rooms hover around -5C, with reindeer hides and sleeping bags provided to help guests stay warm overnight.

Every art suite has its own design, reflecting the work of the artist responsible for it. The experience extends beyond the accommodation, with several dining concepts available, including an ice menu served on plates made from river ice. For visitors, the hotel combines an overnight stay with an opportunity to experience ice sculpture and architecture in a setting shaped by the surrounding winter landscape.

Arctic SnowHotel

Finland offers another option at Arctic SnowHotel near Rovaniemi, the capital of Finnish Lapland. The property generally opens from 15 December until the end of March, when the surrounding landscape is covered in snow and nearby rivers and lakes freeze.

Since 2008, a new hotel made from ice and snow has been created each year. The property has 20 rooms and can accommodate up to 70 guests, with choices ranging from double suites for two people to family rooms that sleep as many as six.

The experience includes more than a night in a frozen room. At the Ice Restaurant, meals are served on ice plates, while the Ice Chapel provides a distinctive setting for spiritual ceremonies. The hotel also has a resident Northern Lights Watcher who monitors the sky and alerts guests when the aurora appears. However, sightings depend on weather conditions and solar activity, so an appearance cannot be guaranteed.

Sorrisniva Igloo Hotel

In Alta, northern Norway, Sorrisniva Igloo Hotel is built from scratch each winter. The property describes itself as the world’s northernmost igloo hotel, using ice harvested from Lake Sierravannet and substantial quantities of snow to create its seasonal accommodation.

According to the hotel’s construction figures, the annual build requires approximately 250 tonnes of ice and 7,000 cubic metres of snow. Each season follows a special theme, with ice sculptors transforming the rooms and suites into individual designs featuring carved furniture and decorative sculptures.

The hotel generally welcomes guests from 20 December until the end of March. Its location also makes it a base for exploring Finnmark, Norway’s northernmost county, where winter activities include snowmobiling across the Finnmark plateau, snowshoeing and husky sledging. Northern Lights excursions are another option for visitors hoping to see the aurora.

Iglu-Dorf Zermatt

For an alpine setting, Iglu-Dorf Zermatt in Switzerland offers hand-carved igloos high above the mountain resort. Rebuilt each winter at an altitude of approximately 2,700 metres, the property sits on the ski slopes above Zermatt and consists of igloos connected by snow corridors.

The season generally runs from 19 December to 4 April, with temperatures inside the igloos remaining around freezing point. The accommodation is designed for travellers seeking an unusual mountain stay rather than the warmth of a conventional hotel room.

During the day, guests can use the shared outdoor terrace, where Swiss cheese fondue is served alongside snacks and hot and cold drinks. The location also allows visitors to combine an igloo stay with skiing and other mountain activities in the surrounding area.

Iglu-Dorf operates other igloo villages beyond Zermatt, including locations in Davos and Gstaad in Switzerland, on Germany’s Zugspitze mountain and in Kuthai near Innsbruck in Austria. Availability and operating dates vary by location and season.

Although these five ice hotels in Europe share a reliance on ice and snow, each offers a different experience. Snowhotel 365 provides a year-round frozen environment, ICEHOTEL is known for its seasonal artistic designs, Arctic SnowHotel combines ice accommodation with dining and aurora watching, Sorrisniva offers access to Arctic activities, and Iglu-Dorf Zermatt places guests high in the Swiss Alps.

Travellers considering a booking should check the latest opening dates, room availability, meal arrangements and included facilities directly with each property. Seasonal hotels can have limited operating periods, and Northern Lights sightings remain dependent on the conditions. For those willing to spend a night in a carefully constructed frozen room, these destinations offer an alternative way to experience Europe’s winter landscapes.
