Hesburger is entering the Italian market, with the Finnish fast food chain set to open its first restaurant in the country in the southern city of Matera in October.
The planned opening was reported by Italian newspaper La Repubblica, which said the restaurant will be located in Matera, in the Basilicata region. The arrival marks a new step in the international expansion of a company that began in Turku in 1980 and has built a presence across several European markets.
Hesburger will not be arriving in Matera alone. US fast food giant McDonald’s is also preparing to open a restaurant in the city, putting two international burger chains on the local scene at almost the same time.
The prospect has attracted attention in a city better known for its traditional food culture and historic character than for international fast food brands. According to La Repubblica, the arrival of the two chains has divided local opinion, with the development prompting debate over how the new restaurants fit into Matera’s established culinary identity.
La Repubblica described Hesburger’s arrival as “sensational” and also explored a possible connection between Matera and the Finnish company through the European Capitals of Culture programme.
Hesburger’s home city of Turku was European Capital of Culture in 2011. Turku also supported Matera’s successful bid to become European Capital of Culture for 2019, creating a connection between the two cities that predates the Finnish chain’s planned entry into Italy.
For Hesburger, the Italian opening follows a broader push beyond its established Nordic markets. The company has expanded into other European countries in recent years, including Romania and Poland, as it has sought to grow its international footprint.
The Italian market represents a particularly notable destination for the Finnish brand because of the country’s strong and internationally recognised food culture. Opening in Matera, a city known for its historic centre and distinctive culinary traditions, therefore gives the expansion an added local dimension.
The Italian development was first reported in Finland by Iltalehti, while La Repubblica has provided details of the planned Matera opening.
If the October launch goes ahead as reported, Hesburger will have added another country to a European expansion that has gradually taken the company beyond its Finnish origins.
