Hayden Panettiere death is being investigated by authorities after reports that the actress may have taken a pill believed to be oxycodone that was allegedly mixed with fentanyl. However, her official cause of death has not yet been confirmed, and toxicology results are still pending.
Panettiere, known for her roles in “Heroes,” “Nashville” and the “Scream” films, died on August 16 at the age of 36. She was found unresponsive at an apartment in Greenville, South Carolina, after emergency services received a call reporting cardiac arrest. Medics attempted to revive her, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Reports from law enforcement sources cited by TMZ say investigators are looking into whether a drug dealer may have supplied the pill. The Drug Enforcement Administration has joined the investigation alongside local authorities in South Carolina. The DEA has not publicly confirmed details of the investigation.
According to reports, Panettiere had travelled from Los Angeles to South Carolina shortly before her death. Her on-and-off boyfriend, Brian Hickerson, was also in the apartment. He has spoken with federal investigators, but he has not been named as a suspect in the case.
Police records also indicate that Hickerson showed officers a bag containing medication that Panettiere had been taking. The names of the medications were redacted from the report, with nine different drugs reportedly concealed in the document.
Narcan, a medication used to reverse the effects of an opioid overdose, was also found at the apartment. Emergency responders reportedly treated the situation as a possible overdose, but those details alone do not establish the official cause of Panettiere’s death.
An autopsy found no signs of trauma that contributed to her death. The Greenville County Coroner’s Office has said that the cause and manner of death remain pending further investigation and toxicology testing. Those tests can take several weeks because they examine alcohol, prescription medication and other drugs.
The reports about a fentanyl-laced pill therefore remain part of the ongoing investigation rather than an established medical finding. Authorities will need the toxicology results and other evidence before confirming what caused Panettiere’s death and whether anyone else could face criminal consequences.
Panettiere’s death has renewed attention on the danger of counterfeit or contaminated pills, but investigators have not publicly confirmed that a fentanyl-laced pill was responsible for her death. For now, the official cause remains undetermined.
