Flydubai Flight FZ1073 was diverted to Saudi Arabia on Wednesday after a violent cockpit incident in which one pilot allegedly stabbed the other and attempted to take control of the aircraft, prompting emergency signals and the scrambling of Israeli fighter jets. The Boeing 737, carrying more than 170 passengers according to Reuters, had been flying from Dubai to Tel Aviv when the incident unfolded.
The aircraft eventually landed safely at Tabuk airport in northwestern Saudi Arabia, where both pilots were taken to hospital. Flydubai confirmed that all passengers and crew were safe and said the incident remained under investigation.
The flight’s movements in the air added to the alarm. According to Flightradar24, the aircraft transmitted the international 7700 general emergency code before later transmitting 7500, the code used to indicate unlawful interference or a possible hijacking. The aircraft also experienced a sharp loss of altitude before stabilising and diverting toward Tabuk.
Israeli authorities responded as the situation developed, with fighter jets scrambled because of fears that an aircraft carrying a large number of Israeli passengers could have been hijacked. The plane was flying near the Jordanian-Saudi border when the emergency unfolded and ultimately turned toward Saudi Arabia.
Passengers later described scenes of panic inside the aircraft. One passenger told Israeli media that people heard screams and saw blood after the cockpit door was opened. Other accounts said passengers and crew members intervened and helped restrain the pilot involved in the confrontation.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said one of the pilots stabbed the other and then appeared to try to crash the aircraft. Israeli officials have been investigating whether the incident was an attempted terrorist attack, although the cause and motive had not been independently established at the time of reporting.
The identity of the suspected attacker has also been reported by Israeli officials. Reuters reported that the pilot was an Omani national. The other pilot was reported to be from the United Arab Emirates. Both were injured in the incident and taken for medical treatment after the emergency landing.
The situation became particularly serious because control of the aircraft appears to have been disrupted during the confrontation. Reports said other pilots who were travelling as passengers, together with cabin crew and passengers, helped regain control of the cockpit and bring the aircraft safely to the ground.
The incident also created an unusual aviation situation when the aircraft landed in Saudi Arabia. The country does not have formal diplomatic relations with Israel, yet Tabuk became the emergency destination for the Israel-bound flight. After the landing, the passengers were eventually transported onward to Israel on a replacement aircraft, according to the Tabuk airport authorities.
Flydubai has so far described what happened as an incident and has said it is working with the relevant authorities. The airline has confirmed that the passengers were safe and accounted for, while investigations continue into what happened inside the cockpit and why the confrontation occurred.
For the passengers aboard FZ1073, however, the details were less abstract. What began as a routine flight between Dubai and Tel Aviv became an emergency in which the aircraft lost altitude, transmitted distress signals and diverted to another country. The plane ultimately reached the ground safely, but the circumstances surrounding the cockpit confrontation remain under investigation.
The available accounts agree that a serious confrontation took place between the pilots, but authorities have not yet established a final explanation for the incident or its motive. Further findings from the investigation will be needed before the sequence of events and the intentions of the pilot involved can be established with certainty.
