Finnish nature will be the central theme of Finland’s 2026 Independence Day celebrations, with President Alexander Stubb and his spouse, Suzanne Innes-Stubb, set to welcome researchers, conservationists and environmental professionals to the traditional reception at the Presidential Palace on 6 December.
The annual Independence Day gala will recognise people whose work contributes to understanding, protecting and promoting Finland’s natural environment. The guest list will include researchers, environmental experts, conservation volunteers, nature tourism entrepreneurs and environmental educators, reflecting the importance of nature protection in Finnish society.

The presidential couple will also invite people they have met during their visits to different parts of Finland, bringing together guests from across the country for the national celebration.
The main reception will take place on Sunday, 6 December, with approximately 1,700 guests expected at the Presidential Palace. Nearly half of those invited will be attending the Independence Day reception for the first time.
Before the evening celebrations, President Stubb and his spouse will host a separate daytime reception on Tuesday, 1 December, for war veterans, members of the Lotta Svärd organisation and other representatives of Finland’s wartime generation.
The daytime arrangement was introduced at the request of veterans and takes into account the guests’ advanced age and health needs. According to the President’s Office, the format makes it possible to accommodate more guests while allowing them to meet and speak with the presidential couple in a more relaxed setting.
Music will once again play an important role in the Independence Day celebrations. The Guards Band and Guards Combo will perform in the Hall of State, accompanied by vocalists Kaija Koo and Antti Koivula. Singers from the Finnish National Opera and other performers will also take part in the programme.
Food served at this year’s reception will reflect the country’s coastal and island traditions. The culinary theme will focus on the Finnish archipelago, with specialities from Åland and southwest Finland featuring prominently on the menu.
Guests can expect dishes and delicacies including lamb, whitefish, traditional archipelago bread and Åland pancakes, bringing regional Finnish food traditions into the Presidential Palace.
The annual Independence Day reception is one of Finland’s most recognised national traditions, bringing together representatives from different areas of society to mark the country’s independence. The choice of Finnish nature as the 2026 theme places particular attention on the people whose professional and voluntary work helps preserve the country’s landscapes, wildlife and natural resources.
Invitations to the December celebrations are now being sent by post, with deliveries expected to continue over the coming weeks.
