Finland is set for a brighter and somewhat warmer start to the week as rain moves away from many parts of the country, bringing a welcome return of sunshine and autumn colours.
Daytime temperatures on Monday are expected to reach around 17 degrees Celsius in southern Finland, while temperatures in Finnish Lapland will remain cooler at about 11 degrees. Similar conditions are forecast for Tuesday as drier air moves in from the north.
The change in weather follows a wet and unsettled weekend, with heavy rainfall reported in several parts of Finland. Central and northern areas are expected to begin clearing on Monday after stormy conditions on Sunday, although the improvement will not be uniform across the country.
Scattered showers will still affect parts of Finland during Monday, with a possibility of thunderstorms in the south. Even so, the breaks in the cloud are expected to provide plenty of opportunities to get outside.
Yle meteorologist Aleksi Lohtander has encouraged people to make the most of the conditions, particularly as autumn colours spread across the landscape.
“It’s worth going outside to enjoy the autumn colours in the sunshine,” Lohtander said.
The relatively mild daytime weather is expected to continue through much of the week, but the change in season will be more noticeable after sunset. Nights are likely to turn particularly cold in western and northern Finland, where temperatures could fall below zero.
That contrast between mild afternoons and cold nights is typical of the changing conditions now settling across the country. While the daytime forecast may still feel relatively gentle for autumn, the overnight temperatures will offer a clearer reminder that colder weather is approaching.
The brighter spell is not expected to last throughout the week. Rain showers are forecast to return to eastern and northern Finland on Wednesday before spreading to other parts of the country on Thursday.
For now, however, the start of the week offers a short window of clearer skies, mild daytime temperatures and the kind of autumn weather that makes Finland’s changing landscape particularly noticeable.
