Edouard Mendy has retired from international football at the age of 34, ending his career with the Senegal national team after 60 appearances for the Lions of Teranga.
Mendy’s biggest achievement with Senegal came in early 2022, when he helped the team win its first Africa Cup of Nations title. The tournament was played in Cameroon, but the final was held in February 2022 after the competition was moved from its original 2021 schedule. Mendy was an important part of the Senegal side that defeated Egypt in the final on penalties.
His international career also established him as one of Africa’s leading goalkeepers. His performances for both club and country brought him wider recognition, and he was later named among the goalkeepers shortlisted for the 2026 Yashin Trophy, an award given to the world’s best goalkeeper.
Mendy now leaves the Senegal setup to concentrate on his club career with Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli. His decision brings an end to a national-team career that included one of the most important moments in Senegalese football history.
For Senegal, Mendy’s departure means the national team will have to move forward without the goalkeeper who helped deliver its first major continental title. For Mendy, it marks a new stage of his career focused entirely on club football.
