Autumn foliage destinations are drawing attention as a new ranking places Québec City in Canada at the top of the world’s best places to experience the season’s changing colours, followed by Kyoto in Japan and Burlington in the United States. Austria’s Wachau Valley was the only European destination to make the top 10.
The ranking, compiled by cruise and holiday company IgluCruise, assessed 40 popular destinations using factors including broadleaf tree density, daily sunshine hours in autumn, the availability of local excursions and increases in online searches. The results highlight destinations where visitors can combine colourful landscapes with sightseeing and seasonal activities.

Québec City claimed first place, supported by its tree cover, range of available excursions and growing search interest. The Canadian destination is known for its historic streets and surrounding landscapes, which provide opportunities to experience autumn colours while exploring the city and nearby areas.
Japan’s Kyoto ranked second. The city has a long-standing tradition of momijigari, the Japanese practice of visiting places to admire autumn leaves, particularly the vivid red foliage of Japanese maple trees. Golden ginkgo leaves also contribute to the seasonal display, attracting visitors to parks, gardens and historic sites.
Timing is an important part of planning an autumn foliage trip to Kyoto. According to the Japan Meteorological Corporation’s 2026 forecast cited in the ranking, the city’s red maple leaves are expected to reach their best viewing period around 11 December, while ginkgo leaves are expected to turn yellow around 27 November. These dates are forecasts rather than guarantees, as weather conditions can affect when leaves change colour and how long they remain on the trees.
The United States secured four places in the top 10, making it the most represented country in the ranking. Burlington, Vermont, took third place, followed by Portland, Maine, in fourth and Jackson, New Hampshire, in fifth. Bar Harbor, Maine, ranked seventh.
The results underline the range of autumn experiences available across the northeastern United States, where forests, small towns and coastal landscapes offer different settings for viewing seasonal foliage. Vermont, Maine and New Hampshire are frequently associated with autumn leaf-peeping, although the timing and intensity of the colours vary from year to year.
Canada secured three positions overall, with Halifax in Nova Scotia ranking ninth and Saguenay in Québec taking tenth place alongside the leading destination, Québec City. Their inclusion gives the country a strong presence on the list, with destinations offering different combinations of urban attractions and access to nature.
Japan also placed two destinations in the top 10. Hiroshima ranked eighth, joining Kyoto as the country’s representative in the international comparison. The result suggests that travellers looking beyond Kyoto may also want to consider other Japanese destinations when planning a seasonal trip, while checking local foliage forecasts before booking.

Europe’s sole representative was Austria’s Wachau Valley, which ranked sixth. Located along the Danube River, the valley is accessible from Vienna by train and is known for its vineyards, historic settlements and river scenery. Its autumn appeal extends beyond the changing leaves, with visitors able to explore the surrounding countryside and stop at traditional wine taverns.
The Wachau Valley is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognised for its cultural landscape. River cruises provide another way to see the region, particularly for travellers who want to combine views of the Danube with visits to villages and vineyards. Its position as the only European entry makes it a notable option for travellers seeking autumn scenery without travelling to North America or East Asia.
The full ranking places Québec City first, Kyoto second and Burlington third. Portland follows in fourth place, ahead of Jackson in fifth and the Wachau Valley in sixth. Bar Harbor ranks seventh, Hiroshima eighth, Halifax ninth and Saguenay tenth.
The study offers a comparison of popular autumn destinations, but the best choice for an individual trip will also depend on travel dates, weather, transport and the type of scenery a visitor wants to experience. Since foliage changes with local conditions, travellers should check updated forecasts close to departure rather than rely solely on a destination’s position in a ranking.
