Barcelona-Amsterdam Named Europe’s Most Stressful Air Route for Nervous Flyers

Barcelona-Amsterdam has been named Europe’s most stressful air route for nervous flyers in an analysis by AirAdvisor, which examined 26 European flight routes based on factors including delays, cancellations, weather conditions and journey time. The ranking measures how predictable a flight experience may be for anxious passengers, not the safety of the aircraft or route.

The Amsterdam Schiphol-Barcelona El Prat connection received a score of 75.1 out of 100, placing it well ahead of the other routes studied. AirAdvisor’s analysis covered flight data from September 2025 to August 2026 and found that 7.02% of flights on the route were delayed by more than one hour. A further 0.83% were delayed by more than three hours, while 2.93% were cancelled.

Weather at Amsterdam Schiphol was another factor considered in the assessment. For passengers who already feel anxious about flying, the possibility of delays, cancellations or difficult weather conditions can add uncertainty before and during a journey.

“Fear of flying rarely depends on a single factor,” AirAdvisor chief executive Anton Radchenko said in a statement. He pointed to long waits at boarding gates, unexpected cancellations and difficult weather as factors that can increase anxiety for nervous travellers.

The second-highest ranking went to the London Heathrow-Amsterdam route, which scored 63.8 points. The route recorded the highest cancellation rate among those analysed, with 3.69% of flights cancelled during the period covered by the study. Both Heathrow and Schiphol are major international airports, making the connection a busy one for travellers moving between the UK and the Netherlands.

Manchester-Dublin ranked third with a score of 63.4, followed by Lisbon-Madeira at 61.4 and Paris Charles de Gaulle-Nice at 60.8. The remaining routes in the top ten included several connections within Norway and other major European city pairs.

Madrid Barajas-London Heathrow was the highest-ranked route involving Madrid, coming in at tenth place with 40.8 points. According to the analysis, 3.38% of flights on the route were delayed by more than an hour, while 0.17% experienced delays of more than three hours. The cancellation rate was 1.15%.

Other Spanish routes also featured prominently. Barcelona El Prat-Rome Fiumicino ranked seventh with 45.2 points. Barcelona-Palma de Mallorca came thirteenth and was notable for its delay figures, with 6.89% of flights affected by delays.

AirAdvisor’s index combines cancellations, delays, weather conditions and flight duration to assess the level of predictability passengers may encounter on different routes. That distinction is important because a high score in the ranking does not mean that a route is more dangerous to fly.

For nervous flyers, the results instead point to the parts of air travel that can create additional uncertainty, particularly when a journey involves delays, cancellations or weather-related disruption. Understanding those factors may help passengers plan for possible interruptions and prepare for a less predictable travel experience.
