Manchester City guilty verdict has prompted a public show of support from former manager Pep Guardiola, who has reaffirmed his backing for the club’s ownership and senior leadership following the independent commission’s findings.
Guardiola, who led Manchester City through one of the most successful periods in the club’s history, addressed supporters after the commission ruled on allegations covering the period from 2009 to 2018. The case followed a four-year investigation into 115 charges brought against the club.
The independent commission found against City on nearly all of the charges considered in the case. Among its findings was that the club had used what it described as “sham contracts” involving several commercial partners. The commission also concluded that Manchester City’s income had been significantly overstated over an eight-year period, by more than £830 million.
The findings represent a serious development for a club that has dominated English football in recent years. Manchester City has rejected the breaches and maintains that it has not committed the wrongdoing alleged against it.
Chief executive Ferran Soriano has also challenged the proceedings, describing the case in a message to players and staff as a “Premier League conspiracy theory”. The club has confirmed that it intends to appeal the commission’s ruling, with the deadline for doing so set for Friday, October 2.
Guardiola’s response was direct. Rather than distancing himself from the club, the former City coach used social media to make clear that his relationship with the club and its leadership remains unchanged.
“I want every single Manchester City fan across the world to know I am here; more than ever,” Guardiola wrote on Instagram.
He went on to reaffirm his support for the club’s owner, chairman and senior executives, as well as the players, staff and supporters.
“Let me be clear: we will get through this together. I love you all,” he wrote.
The verdict leaves Manchester City facing an uncertain period while the appeal process develops. The eventual punishment has not yet been announced, and the possible consequences could be significant if the findings are upheld.
Among the potential sanctions being discussed is relegation, while the club could also face the loss of some of the honours it has won during the period under investigation. Such an outcome could affect the historical record of Guardiola’s time at the Etihad Stadium, including some of the titles and achievements secured during his tenure.
For now, however, Guardiola’s position is clear. Despite the commission’s findings and the prospect of a major disciplinary penalty, he has chosen to publicly stand with Manchester City as the club prepares to challenge the verdict.
