Zachary Barry, a 22-year-old University of Connecticut senior and former member of the university’s men’s track and field team, has died after an SUV crash in Mansfield, Connecticut.
Barry was driving a 2016 Volvo XC60 westbound on Huntington Lodge Road shortly after midnight on Wednesday, September 16, when the vehicle crossed into oncoming traffic and struck a utility pole and a tree, according to Connecticut State Police. He was alone in the SUV.
Emergency responders pulled Barry from the wreckage and transported him by air to Hartford Hospital. He died at 2:43 a.m. from injuries suffered in the crash.
Barry had been a student at UConn since 2022, studying plant science with a concentration in turfgrass. He competed for the university’s men’s track and field team from 2022 through 2024 and was also involved with the Alpha Kappa Lambda fraternity.
His athletic career began well before college. During high school, Barry established himself as a successful middle-distance runner, winning the state 800-meter championship as a junior. In his senior year, he won state titles in the 800 meters, 1,600 meters and mile.
Away from competition, Barry had been building experience in the turf and golf industry, an area closely connected to his university studies. During the summer, he interned at Pine Valley Golf Club in New Jersey, where he worked on course conditioning and turf health management.
UConn officials expressed condolences to Barry’s family and friends following his death, as members of the university community mourned the loss of a student who had combined academic work with athletics and fraternity life.
Authorities said a crash detection alert from a mobile device helped notify emergency services after the collision. The alert allowed responders to locate the crash and begin the emergency response.
The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash remains with Connecticut State Police.
