The yellow sac spider is spreading in Finland after the venomous species was first recorded in the country in 2022, with sightings now reported across parts of the Finnish archipelago and along the southwestern coast.
According to Suomen Luonto magazine, the first known Finnish sighting of Cheiracanthium punctorium, commonly known as the European yellow sac spider, was recorded on Seili island in the Archipelago Sea in 2022. Since then, the spider has been found in several other locations in the archipelago and in coastal areas of southwestern Finland.
One of the more recent areas where the species has been observed is the Porkkala Peninsula in Kirkkonummi, suggesting that its presence is no longer limited to the location of its first recorded appearance.
The European yellow sac spider is more commonly associated with Central Europe, but its range extends further north and east. It has also been recorded in Sweden, Germany and the Baltic countries, placing Finland within an expanding northern range for the species.
The spider has attracted attention because its venom is considered more medically significant than that of other species in the Cheiracanthiidae family. Studies carried out in Central Europe have classified the venom of the yellow sac spider as medically significant, although a bite is not generally considered a serious threat to humans.
A bite can be painful. Reported reactions have been compared with the sensation of a strong wasp or bee sting and may include local swelling and a burning sensation around the bite. In some cases, people can experience mild systemic symptoms such as nausea.
Despite its venom, the spider does not normally seek out humans. Available studies indicate that bites are uncommon and generally happen when the spider is accidentally disturbed or handled. Picking one up by hand, for example, can result in a defensive bite.
The spread of the species in Finland is nevertheless notable because it reflects a wider change in the distribution of species across northern Europe. The latest Finnish observations show that the European yellow sac spider has established a presence beyond its first recorded location and is being encountered in additional parts of the country’s southwestern coastal region.
For people living in or visiting these areas, the main precaution is straightforward: avoid handling unfamiliar spiders. The presence of the yellow sac spider does not mean that encounters will result in bites, and the available evidence indicates that the species generally bites only when accidentally provoked or trapped against the skin.
As further sightings are recorded, its distribution in Finland will become clearer. For now, the European yellow sac spider remains a relatively new addition to Finland’s wildlife, but one whose presence is already being documented beyond the site where it was first identified.
