The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) and Tripadvisor have signed a Letter of Intent to support Thailand’s tourism transformation in 2027, with a focus on attracting higher-value visitors, promoting meaningful travel experiences and strengthening the country’s international tourism appeal.
The agreement supports TAT’s “Transform Together” strategy under “The Year of Transformation” tourism direction for 2027. The initiative aims to position Thailand as “Asia’s No.1 High-Value & Meaningful Destination”, shifting the emphasis towards the quality and value of tourism rather than visitor numbers alone.

The Letter of Intent was signed by Parichat Boonclai, TAT Deputy Governor for Marketing Communications, and Scott Wegener, Tripadvisor’s Director of Enterprise Sales for Asia Pacific. Thapanee Kiatphaibool, Governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand, witnessed the signing alongside executives and representatives from both organisations.
Thapanee said Thailand’s future tourism strategy would focus on the value travellers create through their experiences, including the benefits for local communities and the wider tourism industry.
“The next chapter of Thai tourism will be defined not by how many people travel, but by the value and meaning their journeys create,” she said.
She added that Thailand wanted to become a destination where travellers could “heal better, live longer and feel better”, while ensuring that tourism generated lasting value for communities and businesses. She described “Transform Together” as a way to bring partners, insights and capabilities together to build a more competitive, resilient and sustainable tourism industry.
Under the agreement, TAT and Tripadvisor will establish a framework for joint destination marketing, campaign promotion and the exchange of information about traveller behaviour and emerging tourism trends. They will also explore digital opportunities to increase the international visibility of Thai destinations, travel experiences and tourism businesses.
The partnership brings together TAT’s destination marketing expertise and Tripadvisor’s global travel platform and digital capabilities. The organisations intend to use traveller insights to better understand changing preferences, identify promising markets and connect potential visitors with experiences that match their interests.
For Thailand, the collaboration reflects a broader shift in how the tourism authority approaches destination development. Rather than focusing solely on promoting the country to potential visitors, TAT is seeking to play a more active role in connecting destinations, local communities, tourism operators, technology providers and international partners.
This approach is intended to help create greater value across the visitor economy while supporting a more resilient tourism sector. The agreement provides a framework for cooperation, although specific campaigns, implementation plans and measurable targets were not detailed in the announcement.
The partnership also supports TAT’s ambition to establish Thailand as a “Meaningful Destination”, built around the concept “Healing is the New Luxury”. The direction highlights the country’s potential in wellness tourism, cultural experiences, gastronomy, nature, local knowledge and Thai hospitality.
These areas offer opportunities to attract travellers seeking more than conventional sightseeing, including visitors interested in wellbeing, local traditions, food and closer connections with the places they visit.
Access to traveller insights could help TAT understand which experiences are gaining interest and where international demand may be developing. Greater digital visibility could also give Thai tourism businesses and destinations additional opportunities to reach relevant audiences, although the announcement did not specify how individual businesses would participate or how the partnership’s results would be measured.
The agreement marks a step in TAT’s preparations for its 2027 tourism direction. Its longer-term impact will depend on how the two organisations translate their proposed cooperation into marketing activities, useful insights for the industry and opportunities that deliver tangible benefits to destinations and local communities.
For Thailand, the central challenge is to turn the ambition of high-value, meaningful tourism into practical outcomes for travellers, businesses and the people whose livelihoods depend on the visitor economy.
