Ristikko Club, a new Finnish crossword and puzzle magazine, launches this week with a Christmas calendar edition designed to give readers a break from busy routines and time away from their phones.
Created by a mother whose passion for crosswords inspired the project, the magazine centres on a simple idea: even a few quiet minutes spent solving a puzzle can become a welcome moment of personal time.

The concept reflects the reality of everyday life for people juggling work, family responsibilities and other commitments. Finding an entire evening to relax is not always possible, but sitting down with a pencil and a crossword for a few minutes can be a more manageable way to take a break.
“As a mother, I know that time to yourself doesn’t always mean a whole evening. Sometimes it’s just a moment at the kitchen table. I wanted to create a magazine that makes even that small moment feel like your own. You don’t have to finish everything, sometimes solving a few words is enough,” the creator says.
Ristikko Club is aimed at people who enjoy word games, solving clues and working through puzzles at their own pace. Readers can pick it up over morning coffee, spend time with it on the sofa or share the experience with a friend or family member.
Its debut issue takes the form of a Christmas calendar, offering 24 days of puzzles in the run-up to the festive season. The Finnish-language magazine includes crosswords inspired by Christmas flavours, music, films and winter scenes, alongside codeword puzzles, sudoku and word searches.
The 52-page publication is designed to be used throughout December, with readers able to complete a puzzle each day or dip into the magazine whenever they have time. Its A4 format gives the collection a traditional magazine feel, with paper and pencil at the centre of the experience.
The Christmas calendar also carries a message about making room for personal interests during a period that often involves considerable planning, shopping and preparations for other people. Rather than adding another task to the festive to-do list, the idea is to offer an activity readers can enjoy without needing to complete it all at once.
“In the run-up to Christmas, it’s easy to focus on everyone else’s wishes. The idea behind this calendar is simple: you’re allowed to set aside a small moment for yourself, too,” the creator says.
Although the Christmas calendar is the brand’s first publication, Ristikko Club is planning to develop its offering beyond the festive season. The launch issue will be followed by a crossword and puzzle magazine published four times a year, giving readers a new collection of challenges across the year.
The brand’s philosophy is summed up in a line that connects the appeal of traditional pastimes with the distractions of modern life: “We used to stay up for one more song. Now we fill in one more square.”
The Christmas calendar magazine is printed in Finland and written in Finnish. It launches this week and contains 24 days of puzzles across 52 pages.
