Radisson RED Sydney Haymarket: Radisson Hotel Group to Open First Australian Property in 2029

Radisson RED Sydney Haymarket will bring Radisson Hotel Group’s lifestyle hotel brand to Australia for the first time when the 328-room property opens in Sydney in 2029.

The new hotel will be built in Haymarket, at the southern end of Sydney’s Central Business District. The 31-story development will sit close to Central Station, Chinatown, Darling Harbour, the International Convention Centre, Sydney’s universities and the Tech Central precinct.

The location is one of the main attractions of the project. The hotel will be about 200 metres from Central Station and around 6.3 kilometres from Sydney Airport. Guests will have easy access to trains, light rail and other parts of the city, while many major business, education, entertainment and cultural destinations will be within walking distance.

Radisson RED is known for a less traditional approach to hotels. Instead of focusing only on formal service and conventional hotel design, the brand puts more attention on social spaces, music, art, design and informal guest experiences.

Radisson RED Sydney Haymarket will be an upper-upscale lifestyle hotel with 328 rooms. It will include a restaurant, lobby cafe-bar, pool bar, meeting rooms covering 218 square metres, an outdoor swimming pool and a fitness centre.

The hotel will also have a dedicated lounge for guests who need early check-in or late check-out. This feature could be particularly useful for international travellers arriving in Sydney early or leaving on late flights.

Haymarket has changed considerably in recent years. The area sits between Sydney’s traditional CBD, Chinatown, Central Station and the growing Tech Central precinct. That gives the new hotel access to several different groups of travellers.

Business travellers can reach offices and transport connections quickly. Tourists will be close to major attractions and entertainment areas. Students and visitors to nearby universities also form part of the potential customer base.

The hotel’s proximity to Central Station is especially important. Central is one of Sydney’s main transport hubs, connecting the city with surrounding suburbs and regional destinations. Being only about 200 metres away gives the property a practical advantage that goes beyond its design.

The hotel will also be positioned near the International Convention Centre Sydney and Darling Harbour, two important areas for conferences, exhibitions, events and tourism.

Radisson RED Sydney Haymarket is arriving in an area that is becoming increasingly important to Sydney’s future development.

The southern end of the CBD has seen major investment in transport, housing, education, technology and commercial projects. Tech Central has also strengthened the area’s connection to Sydney’s technology and innovation economy.

For a hotel operator, this creates a useful mix. The property will not have to depend entirely on traditional leisure tourism. Its location gives it access to business travellers, conference visitors, domestic tourists, international visitors and people visiting the city’s universities and technology businesses.

The development is also expected to become a visible part of Sydney’s southern skyline. The tower will overlook the heritage Grand Clock Tower and will have views across nearby residential and commercial areas.

The project is designed to combine accommodation with spaces where guests can work, eat, meet and spend time outside their rooms.

The 328 rooms will form the main part of the property, while the restaurant, cafe-bar and pool bar are intended to give the hotel a more social character.

The outdoor swimming pool and fitness centre will provide additional facilities for both short and longer stays. The 218 square metres of meeting space will also allow the hotel to serve smaller business meetings and events.

This combination reflects the direction of the Radisson RED brand. The company describes the brand as being aimed at travellers who want bold design, social areas, music, art and a more relaxed hotel experience.

Rather than treating the lobby as simply a place to check in, Radisson RED properties generally use common areas as active parts of the guest experience. That approach is becoming more common as travellers increasingly expect hotels to offer places to work, meet friends, eat and spend time without having to leave the property.

The Sydney signing is also part of a broader expansion strategy by Radisson Hotel Group across Australasia.

Elie Younes, Executive Vice President and Global Chief Development Officer of Radisson Hotel Group, said the signing of Australia’s first Radisson RED is an important step in the company’s expansion plans for the region.

The company is continuing to pursue opportunities across lifestyle, upper-upscale, resort and hotel conversion segments. The Sydney project gives Radisson RED a presence in one of the region’s largest and most internationally connected cities.

For the group, entering Australia through Sydney is also significant because the city serves several major travel markets. It is a major destination for international tourists, business travellers, students and domestic visitors.

The partnership is being developed with Ceerose, which is responsible for the new project.

Edward Doueihi, Founder and Managing Director of Ceerose, said the hotel was planned to reflect the changes taking place in the southern part of Sydney. He described its position near Central Station, Tech Central and major visitor and business areas as a key strength of the development.

The new Radisson RED will add 328 rooms to Sydney’s accommodation market when it opens in 2029.

Its biggest challenge will be standing out in a city with a large and competitive hotel sector. Location alone will not guarantee success. The property will need to deliver on the lifestyle concept that separates Radisson RED from more conventional business and upscale hotels.

Its design, public spaces, food and beverage offering and approach to service will therefore be important. The brand’s informal style may appeal particularly to younger travellers and guests looking for something different from a traditional full-service hotel.

The location could also help the hotel capture demand from events and conferences at the International Convention Centre, as well as travellers using Central Station.

The arrival of Radisson RED Sydney Haymarket gives Radisson Hotel Group a new position in Australia’s hotel market and introduces the brand to a country where it has not previously had a Radisson RED property.

For Sydney, the project is another sign of the continued development of Haymarket and the southern CBD. The area’s combination of transport, tourism, education, technology and commercial activity makes it increasingly attractive for large mixed-use and hospitality developments.

When the hotel opens in 2029, its success will depend on more than its 31-story profile or its international brand. Its real test will be whether it can turn its central location and lifestyle concept into a hotel experience that works for the wide range of people passing through this part of Sydney.
