A lightning strike at Tampere Orthodox Church caused a fire inside the church’s bell tower on Saturday evening while a combined wedding and baptism ceremony was taking place.
The lightning struck shortly after 5:00 p.m. during a thunderstorm, hitting the tallest tower of the historic church in central Tampere. According to the Pirkanmaa Rescue Department and the Tampere Orthodox Parish, the strike ignited wooden parts inside the upper section of the bell tower.
Although the incident happened while the church was full of worshippers, no one was injured.
Emergency crews responded quickly and worked for several hours to stop the fire before it could spread through the building.
The fire remained confined to the highest section of the tower and never reached the main church building. Firefighters said the church’s brick construction between the tower and the main structure helped prevent the flames from spreading.
While the building escaped major destruction, the lightning damaged the church’s electrical and alarm systems. Church officials believe the structural damage will be relatively limited, but repairs are expected to take time.
The rescue operation continued until about 11:00 p.m.
Reaching the burning section of the tower proved challenging.
The rescue department’s own lifting equipment could not reach the top of the church, forcing crews to bring in a larger boom lift from a private company.
To safely access the fire, firefighters removed the steel cross from the top of the church dome. They also opened sections of the dome covering and dismantled parts of the roof to reach flames that were hidden inside the wooden structure.
The fire had been smouldering beneath the surface, making it more difficult to detect and fully extinguish.
With the fire now under control, attention has shifted to repairing the damaged tower.
According to the Pirkanmaa Rescue Department, new support structures will be installed to stabilise the damaged dome before restoration work continues.
The church will remain closed while repairs are carried out and damaged electrical and safety systems are replaced.
The church, which was built in the late nineteenth century, is one of Tampere’s protected historic buildings.
Because of its protected status, restoration work is expected to focus on preserving as much of the original structure as possible while ensuring the building remains safe for future use.
The limited spread of the fire means the church avoided the kind of extensive damage that can occur when fires reach older wooden roof structures.
The lightning struck while guests were attending a joint baptism and wedding service inside the church.
According to reports by Ilta-Sanomat, the ceremony continued after the initial shock, even though the building temporarily lost power.
The Tampere Orthodox Parish said the situation remained calm throughout the incident and that there was never an immediate danger to people inside the church.
After firefighters completed their work, a member of the parish remained at the church overnight to carry out a fire watch and monitor the building for any signs that the fire might reignite.
The incident highlights both the vulnerability of historic buildings during severe weather and the importance of rapid emergency response. Thanks to the quick actions of firefighters and the church’s brick construction, the fire was contained before it could cause far greater damage.
