Hayden Panettiere’s cause of death has been confirmed as the toxic effects of fentanyl and several other drugs, with the Greenville County Coroner’s Office ruling that the actress died accidentally at the age of 36.
Panettiere, best known for her roles in “Heroes” and “Nashville“, was found unresponsive at a residence in Greenville, South Carolina, on August 16. Emergency responders were called after a report of cardiac arrest, but efforts to revive her were unsuccessful. She was pronounced dead at 2:32 p.m., according to the coroner’s office.
The official findings, released on September 22, came more than a month after her death. A board-certified forensic pathologist conducted the autopsy and found no signs of trauma that contributed to her death. Toxicology testing identified fentanyl, 4-ANPP, alprazolam, methocarbamol and quetiapine in her system. The coroner’s office classified the manner of death as an accident.
Fentanyl is a powerful synthetic opioid, while 4-ANPP is a chemical intermediate associated with the manufacture of fentanyl. Alprazolam, commonly known by the brand name Xanax, is a prescription medication used primarily to treat anxiety and panic disorders. Methocarbamol is a muscle relaxant, while quetiapine is a prescription drug used to treat several psychiatric conditions.
The coroner’s findings provide the first official account of what caused Panettiere’s death after weeks of uncertainty surrounding the circumstances. The initial investigation had remained open while authorities waited for toxicology results, and Panettiere’s representative had previously urged the public not to rely on reports based on unnamed sources.
That warning followed reports claiming that Panettiere may have taken an oxycodone pill that had been contaminated with fentanyl. Reports also alleged that she had obtained drugs from a dealer in Los Angeles before traveling to South Carolina. Those details were not part of the coroner’s official determination of the cause of death and had previously been described by her representative as unverified hearsay.
The official ruling instead establishes that the combined toxic effects of the five substances caused her death and that authorities did not find trauma that contributed to it. Greenville police have also said that their preliminary investigation did not indicate foul play or suspicious circumstances.
Panettiere’s death brings an end to a career that began when she was a child and later saw her become one of television’s recognizable young stars. She gained widespread attention through roles in “Remember the Titans” and “Heroes” before taking on the role of Juliette Barnes in the country music drama “Nashville”.
Away from the screen, Panettiere had spoken publicly about addiction and other personal difficulties during her adult life. Those struggles became part of the public conversation around her in the years before her death, but the newly released coroner’s findings provide the first official confirmation of the substances responsible for her fatal overdose.
The Greenville County Coroner’s Office has said its portion of the case is now administratively closed following the completion of the autopsy and toxicology work.
