Finnair has launched its first-ever flight to Melbourne, Australia, with the inaugural service arriving in the city on October 28, 2026, according to an announcement shared by the airline.

The Finnish carrier marked the occasion by transporting a special VIP guest on the inaugural journey, referring playfully to the Christmas figure traditionally associated with Korvatunturi in Finnish Lapland. The announcement adds a festive touch to the airline’s expansion of its long-haul services.

The Helsinki to Melbourne route operates via Bangkok, Thailand, where the aircraft makes a technical stop for refuelling and cleaning before continuing to Australia. Finnair says it operates daily flights from Helsinki to Melbourne through Bangkok, offering travellers a new connection between Finland and the Australian city.

To mark the launch, the airline is also promoting discounted fares for travel during winter and early spring. According to its announcement, one-way tickets from Helsinki to Melbourne are available from 998 euros, subject to the applicable booking conditions and availability.

The new service gives travellers departing from Helsinki another option for reaching Melbourne, a major Australian destination for tourism, business and international travel. The Bangkok stop forms part of the flight’s operating arrangements, rather than being presented as a separate destination on the advertised journey.
