Sofia has been named Europe’s best city break destination for 2027 in a new ranking by European Best Destinations, placing Bulgaria’s capital ahead of Lisbon, Copenhagen and seven other European cities selected for their appeal to short-stay travellers.

The ranking highlights Sofia’s combination of ancient history, contemporary culture, local food and access to the mountains. The Bulgarian capital took first place in a list that brings together destinations offering different experiences, from cultural sightseeing and urban exploration to coastal escapes and relaxed weekends away.
Lisbon, Portugal’s capital, secured second place, followed by Copenhagen in Denmark. Cannes in France and Basel in Switzerland completed the top five. Bristol in the United Kingdom, Leuven in Belgium, Milan and Verona in Italy, and Calpe in Spain also made the top 10.
European Best Destinations compiled the ranking through a 33-day voting process involving 11,614 subscribers to its newsletter. Participants could cast up to three votes from a shortlist of 64 European destinations selected by independent travel journalists. The final order was determined by the number of votes received.
The organisation described the selected cities as destinations where visitors can balance sightseeing with time to enjoy the atmosphere, whether planning a romantic break, a weekend with friends, a seaside escape or a trip to mark a special occasion.
Sofia’s appeal lies partly in the variety of experiences available within a relatively compact area. Visitors can explore historic landmarks, sample local food and experience the city’s nightlife before heading towards forest trails and mountain viewpoints. This combination makes the capital an option for travellers who want cultural attractions and outdoor activities without planning separate trips.
The city, known in antiquity as Serdica, has a long history shaped by different periods of European civilisation. Its landmarks include the Saint George Rotunda, Saint Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, Square of Tolerance and Boyana Church, which is recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The mix of historic buildings and modern urban life gives visitors opportunities to explore Sofia’s past while experiencing its contemporary character.
Lisbon’s second-place finish reflects its appeal to travellers looking for a mix of historic neighbourhoods, art, food and unhurried exploration. The Portuguese capital rewards visitors who leave room in their itineraries to wander its streets, discover local restaurants and explore its distinctive neighbourhoods. Rather than trying to cover every attraction in a short visit, travellers can focus on the historic centre, make time for art and enjoy the city’s dining scene.
Copenhagen, which ranked third, offers a different kind of city break. The Danish capital is particularly suited to visitors interested in design, neighbourhood restaurants and cycling around the city. Its appeal also lies in the opportunity to explore at a comfortable pace, combining a handful of planned stops with breaks at cafes and along the waterfront.
The remaining destinations broaden the list’s appeal across Europe. Cannes offers a French Riviera setting, while Basel provides an opportunity to explore Switzerland’s urban culture. Bristol brings a British city experience, and Leuven offers a Belgian destination beyond the country’s better-known tourist centres. Milan combines urban culture with Italy’s fashion and design scene, while Calpe offers a Spanish coastal setting. Verona, also in Italy, completes the ranking with another option for travellers seeking a shorter European getaway.
The results give travellers planning a 2027 trip a range of destinations to consider, depending on whether they prefer historic sights, cycling routes, food, art, coastal scenery or access to nature. However, the ranking reflects the preferences of the participating newsletter subscribers and should be understood as a travel poll rather than a comprehensive measure of destination quality.
