November 2026 in Europe: Best Places to Visit, Events to Attend and New Hotels to Book

For travellers who prefer to avoid the busiest summer months, November can be a good time to explore Europe. Popular attractions are generally past their peak summer season, and some cities begin their Christmas celebrations before December. There are also opportunities to enjoy outdoor activities, attend major sporting events and discover regional food and wine.

Vienna, Austria, is among the destinations attracting early festive visitors. The city’s Christmas market season begins in November, giving travellers an opportunity to experience its traditional decorations and seasonal atmosphere before December arrives. The markets at Schonbrunn Palace and Stephansplatz are scheduled to open on 6 November, followed by the market at Rathausplatz on 13 November.

Beyond the Christmas markets, Vienna has plenty to offer visitors interested in architecture, history and art. The Belvedere and Hofburg palaces provide an introduction to the city’s imperial past, while the Kunsthistorisches Museum houses an extensive collection of European paintings and historical treasures. The city’s traditional coffee houses also provide a welcome place to spend an afternoon as temperatures fall.

For travellers looking for warmer weather, Fuerteventura in Spain’s Canary Islands is a strong alternative. November brings an opportunity to explore the island’s beaches, volcanic scenery and extensive sand dunes without the stronger summer heat. It is also regarded as one of the more affordable islands in the Canary Islands, making it an option for travellers who want a beach holiday without necessarily choosing a high-end resort.

The island is also preparing for a new hotel opening. Elba Corralejo Resort & Spa is scheduled to open on 1 November, with 478 rooms, 20 swimming pools, restaurants and facilities aimed at both families and wellness-focused visitors. Its opening adds another accommodation option to Corralejo, an established holiday area in northern Fuerteventura.

November will also bring new hotel choices to two European city destinations. In Madrid, Hilton is introducing its Outset Collection to Europe with the opening of Casa Verbena Madrid. Located on Calle de Preciados, a pedestrian shopping street in the Spanish capital, the 45-room property is within walking distance of Puerta del Sol, Plaza Mayor and the Royal Palace.

Spanish interior designer Lorenzo Castillo is responsible for the hotel’s design, which draws on Spanish architecture and cultural influences. Its central location makes it particularly relevant to visitors interested in exploring Madrid on foot, with major shopping streets and historic attractions nearby.

In the Netherlands, the Van der Valk Exclusief Hotel Maastricht-Maas is preparing to open as a four-star-plus property beside the River Maas in Maastricht. The 113-room hotel combines contemporary interiors with South American design influences. Its facilities include a restaurant, bar, meeting spaces and a panoramic wellness area on the fifth floor. The location also provides access to Maastricht’s historic centre, making it a potential base for visitors exploring the southern Dutch city.

Beyond accommodation and sightseeing, November has a varied programme of cultural and sporting events. Berlin Science Week, running from 1 to 10 November, will bring exhibitions, workshops, talks and performances to Germany’s capital. This year’s theme, “In Touch”, examines the relationship between science and everyday life.

One of the main attractions is the public programme scheduled for 6 to 8 November. The event offers an alternative to conventional city sightseeing, particularly for visitors interested in science, research and the ways new discoveries affect daily life.

Athens will welcome visitors for another major November event when the 43rd Athens Marathon, The Authentic, takes place on 7 and 8 November. The race follows the historic route from Marathon to the Panathenaic Stadium, connecting the modern sporting event with the history of long-distance running.

Visitors do not have to participate in the race to enjoy the occasion. The marathon also provides an opportunity to experience Athens outside the intense summer heat, when walking around archaeological sites and exploring the city’s neighbourhoods can be more comfortable.

Portugal’s Alentejo region will offer a different kind of experience through the International Hot Air Balloon Festival, scheduled for 7 to 12 November. The event, which dates back to 1997, features balloon flights and public displays, bringing colourful balloons into the skies above the region’s landscapes.

Travellers visiting Alentejo during this period can also consider Borba, where the annual Vine and Wine Festival is scheduled to run from 11 to 15 November. The programme brings together wine tastings, regional food, entertainment, crafts and local producers, offering an introduction to the area’s food and wine traditions.

As November progresses, attention will increasingly turn towards Europe’s Christmas markets. Travellers hoping to experience the festive season before the busiest weeks of December may find the final week of November particularly attractive. Vienna begins its celebrations early, while Strasbourg, Nuremberg and Prague are among the cities preparing for their own Christmas market seasons later in the month.

Winter sun holidays are another reason to plan ahead. The Canary Islands and Madeira remain popular choices for travellers looking for milder weather as temperatures drop across northern Europe. Booking accommodation and flights early can also help those planning trips around Christmas and New Year, when demand can make travel more expensive and availability more limited.

For visitors interested in skiing, November is also a useful time to research accommodation for the 2026-2027 winter season. Several new hotels and lodges are scheduled to welcome guests in Alpine destinations, including The First Cortina in Italy and The Ski Lodge in Verbier, Switzerland, alongside new properties in Morzine and Les Menuires in France.

Whether the priority is an early Christmas market visit, a warmer island holiday, a sporting event or a new hotel stay, November provides a range of ways to experience Europe before the main winter holiday period begins.
