Elon Musk’s Ex-Wife Says He Cut Off Transgender Daughter Vivian’s Health Insurance After Promising His Love

Elon Musk’s estranged relationship with his transgender daughter, Vivian Wilson, has come under renewed scrutiny after his first wife, Justine Wilson, alleged that the billionaire removed their daughter from his health insurance one day after saying he would always love her.

Justine made the claims in Musk, an upcoming documentary by Oscar-winning filmmaker Alex Gibney that examines the technology entrepreneur’s personal life, business empire and growing public influence. Her account offers a glimpse into the family conflict between Musk and Vivian, whose relationship has been strained for several years.

According to Justine, Vivian was deeply hurt by Musk’s public comments about her gender transition. Musk had previously claimed that he had lost his child to what he called the “woke mind virus”, a phrase he has used to criticise progressive views on gender identity and other social issues.

Justine said her daughter was affected by the fact that Musk had communicated his views publicly rather than addressing their relationship privately.
“Elon was telling her, through telling the world, what that point of view actually was. And Elon never tried to repair things, that’s not in his nature,” Justine said in the documentary, describing what she saw as a failure to rebuild the relationship.
Justine also alleged that Musk asked her to pass a message to Vivian after she came out as transgender. According to her account, he wanted their daughter to know that he would always love her. However, Justine said, he cancelled Vivian’s health insurance the following day. The allegation has not been independently established in the material available about the documentary.

She also described Musk’s response to Vivian’s transition as resembling the death of a child. Justine challenged that comparison, recalling that the couple had experienced the actual death of their infant son, Nevada, in 2002. He died at 10 weeks old from sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). She argued that Vivian’s transition was not a death, but part of her growing up.
Vivian, whose full name is Vivian Jenna Wilson, legally dropped Musk’s surname in 2022 and sought to distance herself from her father. Their estrangement became widely known in 2024, when Musk publicly discussed their relationship and repeated his claim that he had lost his child to the “woke mind virus”. Vivian responded publicly, disputing his account of her childhood and criticising his comments about transgender people.

The dispute has continued alongside their differing views on technology and artificial intelligence. Vivian recently appeared in advertising campaigns critical of AI, reflecting her opposition to technology that she believes can undermine human creativity. In one of the advertisements cited in reports about her, she said: “Some things aren’t meant to be fixed.”

The allegations about Vivian’s health insurance feature in Gibney’s documentary, which examines Musk’s relationships with family members, former partners and professional associates. Musk did not participate in the film and has publicly dismissed it as a “hit piece”. His criticism of the documentary has added to the dispute surrounding its portrayal of his personal life.

The film is scheduled for a nationwide theatrical release in the United States on October 16, 2026, following screenings in select cinemas. Justine’s account places the breakdown of Musk’s relationship with Vivian among the documentary’s most personal revelations, raising further questions about a family estrangement that has increasingly played out in public.
