David Akintola has left Hull City after the Nigerian winger and the English club agreed to terminate his contract by mutual consent, bringing his brief spell in English football to an end without a Premier League appearance.
The 30-year-old has now completed a permanent move to Cypriot side Omonoia FC, returning to a country where he previously played after agreeing with Hull City to end his contract. Akintola joined the club in August 2025 from Turkish team Caykur Rizespor, arriving in England after a career that had also taken him through Denmark, Norway and Cyprus.
His first season at Hull City produced 20 Championship appearances, although most of his opportunities came from the bench. He scored once and provided two assists, with his only goal coming in October 2025 when he struck in Hull City’s 1-0 victory over Sheffield United.
Akintola’s last competitive appearance for the club came on January 24, 2026, when he was introduced as a substitute during Hull City’s 2-1 win against Swansea City. He was then left out of the squad for much of the remainder of the season.
His situation changed late in the campaign after Hull City sought permission from the English Football League to re-register him following a serious knee injury suffered by midfielder Eliot Matazo. The appeal was successful, making Akintola available for the club’s Championship play-off final against Middlesbrough at Wembley on May 23, 2026.
Hull City won the final 1-0, securing promotion to the Premier League and ending a nine-year absence from England’s top division. Akintola was part of the registered squad but did not take part in the match.
Although his registration was retained for Hull City’s return to the Premier League for the 2026/27 season, the club’s summer recruitment left him facing increased competition for a place in Sergej Jakirovic’s first-team plans. With limited prospects of regular playing time, both sides agreed to bring his contract to an early end.
Akintola’s departure closes his chapter at Hull City after one season in which he helped the club’s squad during its promotion campaign but never made the Premier League appearance he had hoped for when he moved to England.
His return to Cyprus with Omonoia gives the Nigerian winger an opportunity to revive his career in a familiar football environment and secure a more prominent role after a difficult final period at Hull City.
