Teenager jailed for life Tristan Roberts has been sentenced after murdering his mother in a nature reserve, a crime that shocked his community and raised serious questions about family violence and online behavior. Roberts, 18, held his 45-year-old mother, Angela Shellis, captive in their Prestatyn, north Wales home for over four hours before fatally attacking her in Morfa Nature Park in October 2025.
Police reports indicate Roberts assaulted Angela with a hammer and prevented her from leaving her bedroom. CCTV footage showed the pair leaving their home shortly before 3.20am, walking toward the nearby nature reserve. There, Roberts attacked Angela, inflicting fatal head injuries. He was later seen returning to the scene, apparently attempting to clean evidence. Angela’s body was discovered in undergrowth by a member of the public.
Angela Shellis’ family described her as devoted and loving. Her sister, Sarah Gunther, spoke of her strength and care for her sons. Gunther recalled Angela as someone who offered unwavering support, whose kindness and warmth left lasting impressions on everyone around her. “Her spirit lives on in the laughter she shared, the strength she showed, and the love she poured into her family,” Gunther said.
During court proceedings at Mold Crown Court, evidence emerged that Roberts had detailed his intentions online on Discord. He reportedly posted messages describing his actions and role-playing under the name “Alex.” Prosecutors explained that Roberts recorded the attack, a chilling two-hour audio in which Angela pleaded for help and asked him to call 999. At one point, he forced her to wear a balaclava and led her to the nature reserve before attacking her on a bench.
Roberts’ older brother, Ethan, told the court, “All my mum ever did was love Tristan,” highlighting the deep family trauma caused by the crime.
Tristan Roberts pleaded guilty to murder and has been sentenced to life in prison, with a minimum term of 22 and a half years. Judge Rhys Rowlands described the attack as a cruel and deliberate exertion of control over his mother, noting the profound betrayal of a child killing the very person who had cared for him.
Detective Superintendent Andrew Gibson praised the efforts of investigators and the local community, emphasizing the thorough investigation that uncovered Roberts’ planning and actions. He commended Angela’s family for their patience and bravery throughout the inquiry and recognized Angela’s courage during her final hours. Gibson concluded by saying that keeping Angela at the center of the investigation was vital, and he hoped the sentencing offered some measure of closure for her family.
