Wolt Cuts Jobs in Finland as Swype Expands Its Food Delivery Network

Wolt cuts jobs in Finland as part of a broader effort to restructure its operations and simplify decision making across its global network. The company confirmed that 24 positions in Finland have been eliminated, while 14 roles were adjusted following internal talks that began in February 2026. These discussions involved 45 employees and were part of Wolt’s plan to streamline management and focus investment on markets with long-term growth potential.

The layoffs only affect direct employees. Couriers, who typically operate under separate contractual arrangements, are not impacted. Finland accounts for roughly 1,500 of Wolt’s 15,000 staff worldwide, across about 30 countries. The move comes amid Wolt’s broader strategy of exiting markets like Japan and Uzbekistan to concentrate resources on regions with sustainable growth.

The Finnish food delivery market has shifted sharply in recent months. Foodora, Wolt’s main rival, withdrew from Finland at the end of February 2026, leaving Wolt as the largest platform operating nationally. The exit opened opportunities for new entrants. Uber Eats has publicly confirmed plans to enter Finland later this year, while domestic newcomer Swype has been rapidly expanding its footprint.

Swype reports having processed over 100,000 orders and signed more than 100 restaurants since launching. The company sees Foodora’s departure as a turning point. Chief executive Casper Nordman said the Finnish market was long dominated by a duopoly that limited competition, but Foodora’s exit has changed that landscape. He emphasized that the sector must move away from low-cost, investor-backed delivery models. “The time of free deliveries is coming to an end,” Nordman said. “The focus is to make deliveries sustainable so that courier pay is also addressed.”

Swype has experienced a surge in interest from couriers. Within 24 hours of Foodora’s exit, the platform received over 1,000 applications from delivery workers seeking stable income. The company plans to introduce its own courier network after summer 2026, targeting these workers and supplementing deliveries currently handled by restaurants.

The platform also offers restaurants the option to run independent online stores alongside Swype, with pricing models based on fixed monthly fees or commission. Automated systems adjust menus and marketing strategies according to sales data, allowing restaurants to optimize revenue. Chair Ranza Diven described the strategy as a commitment to clarity and fairness. “We want to be a fair and strategic partner that understands the challenges restaurants face,” she said.

Swype’s technology is built in Finland, emphasizing local data storage and domestic tax compliance. The company plans to scale quickly, leveraging its technology and growing courier pool to solidify its position in the Finnish market.

The Wolt cuts in Finland illustrate a broader trend in the delivery sector, where companies reassess staffing and operational strategies to focus on long-term viability. At the same time, new entrants like Swype are reshaping the competitive landscape, signaling a more dynamic and locally responsive era for Finnish food delivery.
