Wizz Air UK has secured approval to operate charter flights between the United Kingdom and the United States for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Focus Keyword, Wizz Air charter flights, will provide a tailored option for European football teams, fans, and tour operators travelling to the tournament in June and July.
The airline emphasized that obtaining the necessary permits was the result of extensive preparation, regulatory work, and operational planning. Yvonne Moynihan, Managing Director of Wizz Air UK, described the authorisation as a major milestone. “Receiving approval to operate between the UK and the United States is a significant achievement for our company,” Moynihan said. She highlighted that the new service opens “incredible opportunities” for teams and supporters heading to the World Cup.
Wizz Air charter flights will focus exclusively on seasonal and event-based travel. The airline confirmed it has no plans to start regular commercial flights to the United States. Instead, the service will cater to football fans, corporate groups, sports organisations, private travellers, and tour operators seeking transatlantic connections during the summer. Charter enquiries are now open, and demand is expected to be high.
While the World Cup presents a tourism boost for the United States, recent figures suggest travel demand from Europe is below expectations. Aviation analytics firm Cirium reported a year-over-year decline of more than 14 percent in flight bookings from Europe to the US.
Travel could face additional challenges with proposed rules from US Customs and Border Protection. Under a new plan, visitors applying for the Electronic System for Travel Authorization would need to disclose their social media history from the past five years. The European Travel Agents’ and Tour Operators’ Associations warned that such measures could make travel “more complex, intrusive, and less accessible” for European travellers, potentially discouraging trips to the United States entirely.
Despite these obstacles, Wizz Air charter flights are positioned to provide a convenient and reliable option for fans, teams, and groups navigating the transatlantic journey.
