Trump Deploys 5,000 US Marines to Strait of Hormuz Amid Rising Tensions

Trump has ordered the deployment of 5,000 US Marines to Strait of Hormuz, a move reflecting escalating tensions in the ongoing conflict with Iran and mounting risks to global energy supplies. The decision, approved by US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, positions an amphibious ready group in one of the world’s most strategic maritime corridors. The deployment includes the amphibious assault ship USS Tripoli and transport dock ships USS San Diego and USS New Orleans.

The United States is also sending the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit from Japan, a force trained for rapid military operations and crisis response. The operation will introduce advanced aircraft, including F‑35 Lightning II jets, into the region. According to officials, United States Central Command requested the deployment to ensure US presence and security in the Middle East.

The Strait of Hormuz remains critical to global energy flow. Roughly 20 percent of the world’s oil and gas shipments pass through this narrow channel linking the Persian Gulf to open waters. Recent attacks on cargo ships and tankers have sharply reduced maritime traffic, causing major disruption in energy transport. Secretary Hegseth emphasised that the deployment aims to degrade Iran’s military capabilities. He noted that the Iranian Air Force, Navy, and missile programs are shrinking, and the country lacks the capacity to rebuild quickly.

The disruption in the Strait has already sent shockwaves through global oil markets. Shipping insurance costs have risen sharply, and many tankers are rerouting to avoid the region. Analysts warn that this represents one of the largest supply interruptions in modern energy markets.

The wider consequences are being felt internationally. Fuel prices are climbing in multiple countries, putting pressure on governments and energy agencies to stabilise supply chains while the conflict persists. The deployment signals a clear US commitment to securing energy routes and countering threats in the region, even as tensions with Iran continue to shape global markets.
