Tony Gonzales affair has become a central issue in the Texas political landscape after the Republican congressman admitted to an extramarital relationship with a former staffer who later died in a devastating fire. The admission came on March 4, a day after Gonzales advanced to a runoff in the Texas 23rd District Republican primary.

Gonzales, 45, acknowledged the affair on “The Joe Pags Show,” describing it as a lapse in judgment and taking full responsibility for the actions. He said he has reconciled with his wife and sought forgiveness for his mistakes, noting that the experience was humbling.
The staffer involved, Regina Santos-Aviles, was a married mother who tragically fatally set herself on fire in her Uvalde home on September 13, 2025, dying the following day from severe burns. Her widower, Adrian Aviles, publicly accused Gonzales of abusing his power by engaging in a relationship with a subordinate. He has demanded that Gonzales be held accountable.
The House Ethics Committee has launched an investigation into Gonzales over allegations that he engaged in sexual misconduct with a staffer and unfairly dispensed special favors. Leaked text messages have surfaced showing Gonzales asking Santos-Aviles for intimate photos, and other messages indicated the staffer discussed the affair with colleagues.
Gonzales has strongly denied any responsibility for Santos-Aviles’ death, stating he had no contact with her after June 2024. He told the show that reports claiming she struggled at work were inaccurate, insisting she was thriving professionally before the tragic incident. Several fellow House Republicans have called for Gonzales to resign over the scandal.
Politically, Gonzales faces a challenging path forward. He will compete in a May 26 runoff against Republican Brandon Herrera after failing to secure a majority of votes in the initial primary. Herrera narrowly lost to Gonzales in the 2024 GOP primary and outpaced him by nearly 1,000 votes in Tuesday’s contest, highlighting growing tensions within the district.
The affair and its consequences have put Gonzales under intense scrutiny, raising broader questions about ethics, accountability, and leadership in public office. The unfolding investigation and runoff election will determine whether he can retain his position amid mounting controversy and public concern.
