Tiger Woods has been arrested and charged with driving under the influence, property damage, and refusal to submit to a lawful test following a crash in his Florida neighborhood. The 15-time major champion was involved in a single-vehicle accident when his SUV rolled onto its side after colliding with a trailer he attempted to pass.

The incident occurred shortly after 2pm local time on Friday in Martin County, the town where Woods resides. Sheriff John Budensiek of the Martin County sheriff’s office reported that Woods displayed “signs of impairment” at the scene. Investigators conducted several roadside tests, taking into account Woods’ prior injuries and surgeries, but determined he was not under the influence of alcohol. A breathalyzer test administered at the scene returned a reading of zero.
Despite the negative breath test, Woods refused to provide a urine sample when requested. This refusal led to additional charges of property damage and failure to comply with a lawful test. No injuries were reported in the crash. Photos from the scene show Woods’ vehicle resting on its driver side, indicating the force of the impact and the subsequent rollover.

According to Budensiek, Woods had been driving at high speed along a road with a 30mph limit. After tipping onto its side, the vehicle slid a considerable distance before coming to a stop. Officers noted that Woods appeared lethargic at the scene, suggesting impairment from medication rather than alcohol.
The Martin County sheriff’s office confirmed that the other driver involved in the crash was unharmed. Woods was taken into custody and will remain in jail for at least eight hours before being eligible for bond. The charges against him are not considered felonies.

While the investigation is ongoing, the circumstances of the crash have raised questions about medication use and driving safety, even among highly experienced drivers. Observers note that incidents like these can have reputational and legal implications, highlighting the importance of cautious driving regardless of a person’s public profile.

Tiger Woods remains under scrutiny as authorities continue to review the events leading to the crash. The combination of high speed, a rollover, and refusal to comply with testing has drawn public attention and debate over accountability, even for elite athletes. Local law enforcement emphasized that the focus remains on understanding the full context of the crash rather than solely alcohol involvement.
