Theo Walcott Urges Max Dowman to Hold Off England World Cup Call-Up

Max Dowman England call-up has become a hot topic after the 16-year-old striker made history as the youngest Premier League goalscorer. The milestone has sparked talk of him joining England’s World Cup squad, but former Arsenal star Theo Walcott has advised caution.

Walcott, who himself debuted for England at 17 during the 2006 World Cup, said he hopes Dowman is not rushed into international football. “I hope he doesn’t go,” Walcott said. Reflecting on his own early experience, he added: “If I could go back, I would say to myself, ‘no, no, don’t do it.’” He believes that moving too quickly into the senior international stage can hinder a young player’s development, both on the field and personally.

Thomas Tuchel has indicated that Dowman is being monitored closely and could be considered for the national team. “We always have the chance to call him… maybe, up for the World Cup,” Tuchel said. “Everyone who tells me about Max praises him… he’s in a fantastic environment.” Yet Walcott stressed that despite Dowman’s rare talent, emotional growth and gradual development are just as crucial. “He needs to grow at his own pace, especially on the emotional side because he’s a young adult,” he said.

Arsenal’s careful management of Dowman has not gone unnoticed. Walcott praised the club’s protective approach, suggesting it will benefit the teenager in the long term. At the same time, he noted that England already has several experienced wingers ahead of Dowman in the pecking order, including Bukayo Saka, Noni Madueke, Jarrod Bowen, Anthony Gordon, and Harvey Barnes.

Walcott concluded that Dowman’s time for senior international football will arrive, but now is not the right moment. “In time he will go… but I don’t think this is the time,” he said. By focusing on development rather than immediate exposure, Dowman has the opportunity to build a sustainable career at both club and international level.
