Spain Media Leak Prosecutor Scandal: Attorney General Convicted Over Opposition Case

Spain media leak prosecutor scandal has taken a sharp turn after the Supreme Court of Spain delivered a conviction against the country’s attorney general, Alvaro Garcia Ortiz. The ruling centers on the improper release of confidential legal information linked to a sensitive tax investigation involving figures connected to the conservative opposition. The news has caused visible political tension for Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and his Socialist-led administration.

The case focuses on information tied to Alberto Gonzalez Amador, partner of Isabel Diaz Ayuso, who serves as the Madrid regional president and remains one of the most influential conservative voices in the country. The court determined that Garcia Ortiz disclosed information from an active investigation without legal basis. As a result, he will step down for a two year period, pay an estimated fine of 7,300 euros and compensate Gonzalez Amador with 10,000 euros in damages. The court’s decision has prompted a fresh wave of political debate throughout Spain.

The controversy originally surfaced in 2024 when documents leaked to the media suggested that Gonzalez Amador was considering a plea deal connected to alleged tax misconduct. These reports quickly sparked accusations that the leak was designed to weaken Ayuso’s political strength at a critical moment. Leaders of the Popular Party criticized the situation, with PP leader Alberto Nunez Feijoo labeling the ruling as unprecedented. He argued that the situation casts a permanent shadow over Sanchez and demanded a public apology.

The government issued a statement acknowledging the ruling while openly expressing disagreement with the decision. Officials also confirmed plans to begin the process of appointing a new attorney general soon. The move signals a likely shift in legal leadership ahead of upcoming political discussions and judicial proceedings.

During hearings, Garcia Ortiz denied personal responsibility for the leak. His legal representation argued that the accusations were part of a targeted effort by political opponents to divert public attention away from financial matters linked to Gonzalez Amador. Public prosecutors requested his acquittal, stating that there was no evidence directly connecting him to the release of documents. Despite these arguments, the court’s decision now deepens the political pressure surrounding the government, which is already dealing with other corruption related inquiries involving relatives of the prime minister and former members of the Socialist Party.

The Popular Party continues to demand early elections and Sanchez’s resignation, claiming that his administration has normalized misconduct. Sanchez has pushed back against all accusations, calling them a politically driven smear campaign designed to damage his leadership rather than address facts.
