The culinary world has a new gem! Chef Warren Mendes, originally from South Africa, unveiled his debut cookbook, Food Trail South Africa, at a lively media event hosted at Sydney’s latest South African hotspot, The Meat and Wine Co. ‘Safari.’
This cookbook accompanies a successful television series of the same name, produced by South African Tourism and Projucer, which has captivated over 3.5 million viewers across two seasons on Network 10. The series has also reached audiences on SBS and is now broadcasting across Asia and beyond.
Much like the vibrant show, Mendes’ cookbook invites readers on a delectable journey through South Africa’s rich culture. With stunning imagery, captivating stories, and a collection of 100 carefully curated recipes, it’s a feast for the senses that brings the essence of South African cuisine right into your kitchen.
Food Trail South Africa showcases an impressive array of distinctive and vibrant ingredients, reflecting the bold flavors that define South African cooking. From traditional favorites like Bobotie, Bunny Chow, and Koeksisters to exciting new creations such as peri-peri seafood curry and spicy chili risotto, there’s something to tantalize every palate.
The launch event buzzed with energy, attracting a diverse group of media and culinary personalities, including well-known figures like Matt Preston, Miguel Maestre, Tristan McManus, George Calombaris, Manu Feildel, Justine Schofield, Adam Liaw, Rose Adam, Daniel Doody, and the dynamic duo Mitch and Mark, along with Barry Conrad.
Expressing his excitement, Warren Mendes stated, “As a proud South African, I’m thrilled to share a piece of my country’s vibrant culture with an international audience. Food Trail South Africa goes beyond the TV series, offering readers a deeper taste of our cuisine while revealing secrets from the kitchen and the heart of our communities.”
“It has been a privilege to meet so many wonderful people and experience the diverse places in South Africa while creating this book. Each dish reflects the vibrant flavors and ideas contributed by every community we visited.”
Yana Shvarts, Acting Hub Head of South African Tourism Australasia, emphasized the growing trend of food tourism, noting, “Insights suggest that food tourism will be the biggest trend of 2024, with Australian travelers keen on experiencing local and authentic cuisines. However, Food Trail South Africa—both the series and the cookbook—offers much more than just recipes; it weaves the stories of our cultures, unique locations, and warm-hearted people, all of which contribute to South Africa’s distinctive flavor.”
Food Trail South Africa is now available for purchase in Australia and New Zealand exclusively through boutique retailer Brio Books, priced at $59.99 AUD RRP. Readers can easily order their copy via the Brio Books website.
