Riihimäki Wartime Bomb Discovery Near Ice Rink Raises Police Investigation

Riihimäki wartime bomb discovery began when police in the town of Riihimäki located an old Russian wartime explosive near an ice rink and sports park, triggering a security alert and a criminal investigation that briefly disrupted the area before the device was safely recovered and handed over for destruction.

Riihimäki wartime bomb discovery quickly became more complex when the object, initially found on Wednesday near the sports area, was no longer at its original location the following day. Officers had first believed it was a wartime grenade, but later confirmed it was a Russian wartime aerial incendiary bomb, several dozen centimetres in size. The discovery led authorities to secure the area and issue a public danger warning while they assessed the risk.

The situation escalated after investigators realized the device had been moved. Police from the Häme Police Department questioned a middle-aged man who had earlier appeared in public appeals related to the search. He was not arrested, but during questioning he told officers where the explosive had been left after being moved from its initial discovery point. The bomb was then recovered only a short distance away, a few dozen metres from the original site near the ice rink.

During the search period, the surrounding area was sealed off to protect the public, and the safety warning remained in effect until the device was found again. Once the explosive was secured, the warning was cancelled and normal access to the area was restored. The device was then transferred to the Finnish Defence Forces for controlled destruction, as specialists handled the disposal of the wartime ordnance.

Police are now treating the case as an explosives offence. Investigators also revealed that the same man had spoken to officers but had not been formally arrested, and they are examining whether an earlier report from 2 April about a possible explosive in the same area is connected to the current discovery. That earlier alert is now part of the wider investigation into how the device came to be found, moved, and then recovered again within a short timeframe.

Wartime explosives occasionally surface in Finland due to remnants left behind from past conflicts, and they remain dangerous even decades later. In this case, the Riihimäki wartime bomb discovery highlighted how quickly a controlled safety situation can change when an object is moved before authorities complete their assessment, forcing police and military teams to respond under time pressure to secure the area and eliminate the risk.
