Raheem Sterling has struggled to find his rhythm at Feyenoord since joining the club in January, raising questions about whether his career at the top level is winding down.
Sterling, who left Chelsea by mutual agreement, has managed just one assist in five Eredivisie appearances. His performances have drawn criticism from former Dutch internationals and football pundits. On the Willem & Wessel podcast, Rene van der Gijp suggested Sterling consider stepping away from professional football. “He should just go to Robin van Persie and say: let’s stop this. This isn’t going to work,” Van der Gijp said. He added that Sterling might be better off enjoying life off the pitch, imagining the winger relaxing in Ibiza with his wife.
The criticism comes after Sterling’s most recent game against Ajax, where he was substituted after 55 minutes as Feyenoord chased a 1-1 draw. The game highlighted his limited impact in matches and a struggle to adapt to the Eredivisie style. Willem van Hanegem also weighed in, questioning the value of Sterling’s contributions and suggesting that, while he once was a top player, he is no longer delivering at the level expected.
Despite the scrutiny, head coach Robin van Persie has expressed patience, emphasizing the importance of Sterling regaining fitness and contributing more effectively on and off the ball. “The most important thing is winning matches during this period of Raheem getting fitter and fitter,” Van Persie said, acknowledging progress while calling for a greater overall impact.
Sterling has not represented England since the 2022 World Cup and is on a short-term contract with Feyenoord lasting until the end of the season. Observers now watch to see whether he can regain form or if his next career move will take him away from top-level football entirely.
