Radisson Hotel Sustainability Initiative Sets New Standard for Eco-Friendly Travel

How Radisson Hotel Sustainability Initiative Leads the Way in Recycling and Plastic Reduction.

Radisson Hotel Group is taking bold steps to reshape the hospitality industry with a powerful sustainability initiative that is already making an impact in India, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE. By introducing a closed loop recycling model for bulk liquid amenities, the Group is significantly cutting back on single-use plastics, while promoting a circular economy that benefits both the environment and local communities.

Used amenity bottles are no longer just waste. In this initiative, they are collected from Radisson properties, drained of residual liquids, and processed into new materials. Bottles are cleaned, repurposed, and recycled by certified partners. In India alone, Radisson works with a network of eleven recycling companies, ensuring every bottle has traceable documentation through audits and regular reports.

This move directly supports the Group’s commitment to reducing its environmental impact without compromising the guest experience. It is a clear signal that Radisson is not just talking about sustainability — it is building real systems to support it.

Another milestone in this journey is the rollout of soap dispensers to replace miniature plastic bottles in hotel bathrooms. As of now, 91 percent of Radisson hotels have already adopted soap dispensers in public areas. By 2025, the Group aims to eliminate more than 57 million single-use bottles every year, preventing nearly 500 tons of plastic from entering the waste stream.

This push extends beyond liquid amenities. Radisson has also transformed the way it handles dry bathroom products. Gone are the single-use plastic wrappings. In their place are eco-conscious materials like FSC-certified cardboard, stone paper made from calcium carbonate, and PSM compounds derived from plant starches. Even the printing process uses soybean oil ink, underlining the brand’s dedication to responsible sourcing.

Inge Huijbrechts, Radisson’s Chief Sustainability and Security Officer, emphasized that these changes are part of a broader mission. She noted that guest amenities, after food and beverage, contribute the most to a hotel’s scope 3 emissions. Reducing this footprint is critical for the Group’s Net Zero 2050 target — and the closed loop system is a big step in that direction.

Guests are responding. A global survey found that 75 percent of travelers are actively seeking more sustainable options, and 43 percent believe hospitality companies play a major role in reducing travel’s environmental damage. Radisson’s approach offers a solution that aligns with those expectations.

Through initiatives like Hotel Sustainability Basics and partnerships with eco-label certifications, Radisson is turning promises into policies. The result? Thoughtfully designed Sustainable Stays that meet guest needs without burdening the planet.
