Travelers flying from Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport should brace themselves for a rise in ticket prices. Starting next year, airlines operating through this major hub will implement annual price increases over the next two years, with a hefty 41% spike anticipated in 2025, followed by a 5% increase in 2026. Interestingly, prices are projected to decrease by 7.5% in 2027. This results in a significant overall price hike of 37% between 2024 and 2027, as reported by MonteOzTravels.com.
This steep increase is deemed essential to fund improvements in quality and sustainability at Schiphol, enhancing services for both airlines and passengers while ensuring fair working conditions for all airport staff.
CFO Robert Carsouw of the Royal Schiphol Group remarked: “The upcoming changes aim to elevate the quality of services at Schiphol, yet they may also position this Dutch airport as the second-most expensive in Europe.”
Expect Higher Costs for Night Flights In addition to regular fare increases, night flights will see particularly steep price hikes as the airport intensifies its efforts to combat noise pollution. Passengers can expect to pay three to six times more for flying at night compared to daytime flights. Furthermore, the type of aircraft used will also play a role in determining ticket prices.
Carsouw noted, “By imposing significant costs or even making it unfeasible for noisier aircraft to operate at night, we’re taking steps to mitigate disturbances for our local communities.”
Incentives for Quieter Aircraft To further encourage airlines to adopt newer, quieter aircraft, Schiphol will offer lower fares for these planes. Conversely, older, noisier models will incur higher charges, nudging airlines toward modernizing their fleets.
The announcement regarding this price increase came in 2023, but it follows previous smaller fee hikes. For instance, in 2024, ticket prices were raised by 14.8%.
These adjustments are part of a larger initiative to invest over €3 billion in maintenance and upgrades between 2024 and 2027.
Recent data from Airport World reveals that Schiphol welcomed 31.8 million passengers in the first half of 2024, with expectations to reach between 65 to 69 million by year-end.
