Visa-Free Travel Boosts Ghana-South Africa Tourism: Minister Patricia de Lille Leads High-Level Visit.

South Africa’s Minister of Tourism, Patricia de Lille, is set to visit Ghana from March 26 to 28 as part of a strategic outreach program aimed at deepening tourism partnerships and boosting cultural exchange between the two nations.

During the visit, Minister de Lille will meet with Ghana’s Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts, Honourable Abla-Dzifa Gomashie, as well as key figures from the South Africa-Ghana Chamber of Commerce, the tourism trade sector, and leading media and tourism stakeholders. The goal is to position South Africa as a prime destination for both leisure and MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) travel.

The recent relaxation of visa regulations between South Africa and Ghana in November 2023 marked a major breakthrough for tourism and trade. The new agreement allows citizens of both countries to travel visa-free for up to 90 days within a year. This move has not only made travel more accessible but has also strengthened economic and cultural ties.

“Ghana and the broader African continent are key markets for South Africa’s tourism sector. This visit underscores our commitment to fostering deeper partnerships and creating new opportunities for growth through meaningful collaboration,” Minister de Lille said.

Ghana’s tourism numbers have shown impressive growth since the visa waiver was introduced. In 2024, tourist arrivals from Ghana to South Africa jumped by a staggering 149% compared to 2023, with 36,656 Ghanaian visitors recorded. Minister de Lille credited this surge to the visa waiver and South African Tourism’s consistent promotional efforts.

Minister de Lille’s visit comes at a pivotal time as South Africa prepares to host the prestigious G20 Summit this year. This global event highlights South Africa’s growing influence on the international stage and reflects its dedication to building stronger ties within Africa.

“We see immense potential in boosting intra-African travel to drive economic growth, enhance cultural understanding, and create shared prosperity. This outreach mission is a key step toward reinforcing our relationship with Ghana and unlocking new tourism opportunities,” Minister de Lille added.

The visit will also create an opportunity for senior officials from both nations to discuss bilateral tourism issues and explore new avenues for collaboration. This outreach initiative marks a new chapter in South Africa and Ghana’s tourism journey, setting the stage for sustained growth and deeper cultural connections.
