A nurse falsely accused patient of sexual assault after engaging in repeated sexual encounters with him, a breach of trust that authorities called deeply damaging. Melissa Knutson, who was employed by the Monroe County Drug Court in 2022, was convicted of misconduct in public office and obstructing an officer following the revelations.
Knutson’s role required her to administer Vivitrol, a medication designed to aid patients recovering from substance abuse. Prosecutors revealed that instead of maintaining professional boundaries, she initiated a sexual relationship with the patient. When authorities began investigating, she falsely claimed the patient had assaulted her, asserting she had stayed silent out of fear for her safety and that of her family.
Evidence quickly contradicted her story. Text messages exchanged between Knutson and the patient showed she had initiated the encounters and even discussed plans to deny everything if discovered. Ultimately, she admitted to fabricating the assault allegation to evade responsibility.
District Attorney Kevin Croninger described the situation as exceptionally serious. “The harm caused by Ms. Knutson was deep and significant. She violated the sacred trust between a nurse and her patient and compounded that harm by making a false accusation of sexual assault,” he said. Croninger noted the gravity of the misconduct was heightened because the patient was a participant in a drug court program, a context that relied heavily on professional integrity and support.
Knutson was sentenced to 18 months in prison, followed by two years of extended supervision. Legal experts and advocates note that cases like this erode public trust in healthcare and rehabilitation systems, highlighting the critical importance of accountability when professional boundaries are breached.
The case serves as a stark reminder that positions of trust carry immense responsibility. Patients, especially those navigating recovery programs, are exceptionally vulnerable.
