Norway has announced it will keep its internal border checks with neighboring Schengen countries for an additional 20 days, extending the measure to December 1, 2024.

This decision, confirmed by Norwegian Minister of Justice and Emergency Services Emilie Mehl, aims to enhance security for Norwegian citizens against potential terror threats, as reported by MonteOzTravels.com.

Originally introduced in October 2024, Norway’s border controls were initially set to last only until October 22. However, as circumstances unfolded, officials extended the measure to November 11. With the new deadline approaching, Minister Mehl emphasized the ongoing need for strict border monitoring.

“I extended border controls on October 22, 2024, and am now extending them another 20 days,” said Minister Mehl, highlighting that heightened border vigilance is essential for public safety amid current threats.

Uncertainty Surrounds the Duration of Border Controls

While Minister Mehl didn’t confirm if this would be the last extension, it’s widely speculated that Norway may prolong its internal border checks with Schengen nations as long as they’re deemed necessary.

Ministry Assures Smooth Border Traffic Flow

The Norwegian Ministry of Justice and Emergency Preparedness has assured the public that, despite the extended checks, police will work to maintain smooth traffic at border points. They emphasized that these measures are temporary and will be lifted as soon as security threats decrease.

“The police will ensure border traffic flows as smoothly as possible,” the Ministry stated, underlining that these controls will only last as long as they’re necessary.

Simultaneously, Minister Mehl has also approved the continuation of temporary police armament for another three months, citing the still-elevated terror threat level. According to the Norwegian Police Directorate, armed officers will be better equipped to respond swiftly to potential threats.

Other European Nations Strengthen Border Controls

Norway isn’t alone in implementing strict border measures. Denmark and Sweden recently increased their border security, with Denmark introducing additional security protocols and Sweden extending its checks for six more months. France has prolonged its border controls until April 2025 in response to terror threats and irregular migration, while Germany has introduced checks at all land borders.

Several other Schengen countries are also maintaining internal border controls to address similar security concerns.
