A Nigerian student arrested with cocaine in South Africa has sparked renewed attention on drug trafficking networks in KwaZulu-Natal. The 27-year-old Nigerian national was apprehended in Umbilo after authorities discovered cocaine valued at more than N49 million. The suspect, who entered South Africa on a student visa, may be connected to a prior drug-related arrest in 2025.
The arrest unfolded on Monday, March 16, when officers from the Metro Police Tactical Support Unit, Metro Police Task Team, and SAPS KZN Counter Narcotics intercepted the suspect as he exited his vehicle. Authorities found high-purity cocaine hidden in a sock. A subsequent search of his residence uncovered additional drugs, bringing the total value of seized narcotics close to R600,000.
Police records indicate the suspect had been arrested previously in 2025 for possession of cocaine valued at over R400,000. This latest seizure is part of an ongoing investigation into a larger drug syndicate with alleged Nigerian connections, involved in trafficking, manufacturing, storing, and distributing narcotics.
eNCA senior reporter Dasen Thathiah confirmed that the suspect was in South Africa on a student visa. According to documents, he came from Nigeria to pursue studies. Even after his arrest, bank transactions linked to him continued, prompting authorities to refer the matter to the Asset Forfeiture Unit for further examination.
Several other individuals connected to the network have already been arrested. Investigations into the syndicate remain active, and authorities warn that this case highlights the ongoing challenges of international drug trafficking in the region.
