Nigerian Sentenced for Sekondi Hospital Robbery in Ghana: Full Story Behind the 10-Year Jail Term

Nigerian sentenced for Sekondi hospital robbery after a brutal night attack that shocked many in Ghana. A 36 year old man, Stanley Afaku, has been jailed for 10 years after admitting to his role in an armed robbery at the Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital in Sekondi. The verdict was delivered by the Sekondi Circuit Court, with Her Honour Naa Amberley Akowuah presiding.

The court further ruled that the Ghana Immigration Service should deport Afaku after he completes his sentence. This case has sparked fresh concern about the safety of public hospitals and the boldness of crimes being committed at such facilities.

The robbery occurred on February 23 2025. Afaku and his accomplice, Samuel Nickson also known as Egya Acquah, stormed the hospital premises and held the security guard, Nash Arthur, at gunpoint. The two attackers tied the guard with his own shirt, stole his mobile phone, and proceeded to raid the Out Patient Department pharmacy.

They made away with a flat screen television and vanished before police could arrive.

After weeks of tracking, officers arrested Afaku on June 4 2025 in the Esiama Bafana ghetto. He confessed on the spot and named Nickson as the second person involved in the robbery. Nickson, who is already standing trial for a different robbery case, denied the charges. He is currently in police custody and expected to reappear in court on June 24 2025.

Ghanaian Authorities to Deport Afaku After Sentence

Besides the prison term, the court made it clear that Afaku must be deported by the Ghana Immigration Service when his jail term ends. Authorities see this move as necessary to protect the country’s internal security and discourage foreign nationals from engaging in crime.

This robbery case has ignited serious conversations about hospital safety, especially during night shifts. The fact that a security guard could be so easily overpowered has raised eyebrows. Many now believe stronger security measures are urgently needed at public health centers across Ghana.
