Larry Summers Epstein Investigation begins as former Harvard President steps away from teaching role

Summers also stepped back from his position as Director of the Mossavar Rahmani Center for Business and Government. Harvard said his co instructors will complete the remaining sessions for the current semester. He is not listed to teach in the next academic term.

A spokesperson for Summers said it was in the best interest of the center for him to take leave while the review continues. The federal government is preparing to release a major batch of Epstein related files, creating further pressure on institutions and public figures who had documented contact with Epstein.

Donald Trump announced on Wednesday night that he had signed the bill approving the release of the files after months of public debate. The move has intensified attention on those named in newly obtained records.

Summers, a former United States Treasury Secretary during the Clinton administration, recently declared he would step away from public commitments. The decision to leave classroom duties followed two days later.

The House Oversight Committee released email exchanges between Summers and Epstein, showing personal communications that extended beyond professional or university matters. The public release of these emails triggered wider calls for transparency and accountability within academic institutions.

Harvard released a statement describing a broad review of individuals named in newly published Epstein documents. According to the university, the review aims to evaluate what actions may be required once internal assessments are complete.

Trump referenced Summers in comments posted on Truth Social, where he highlighted political figures with known ties or communications with Epstein. He credited his administration with the original 2019 federal case against Epstein and repeated claims that the release of the files could reveal additional associations involving high profile Democratic figures.

Democratic Representative Ro Khanna of California, co sponsor of the bill, stated that survivors of Epstein related crimes pushed the legislation forward despite obstacles. He warned that any attempt to block compliance may lead to legal consequences, including contempt of Congress.

Harvard has not indicated how long its internal review may last. Summers has not publicly stated whether he plans to return to teaching in the future.
