Kyle Walker Announces England Retirement Ahead of World Cup 2026
Kyle Walker has announced his retirement from international football, ending a 14-year career with the England national team just months before the 2026 World Cup. The 35-year-old right-back leaves a legacy built on consistency, leadership, and five major tournament appearances.

Walker made his England debut in 2011 against Spain at 21 and went on to earn 96 caps. His international career included appearances at UEFA Euro 2016, the 2018 FIFA World Cup, UEFA Euro 2020, the 2022 FIFA World Cup, and UEFA Euro 2024. He was central to England reaching back-to-back European Championship finals, losing narrowly to Italy at Euro 2020 and to Spain at Euro 2024. He also helped the team reach the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup under Gareth Southgate.

Despite being primarily a defensive presence, Walker scored his only international goal in 2023 against Ukraine and captained the national team on three occasions. His last appearance came during a surprising 3-1 friendly defeat to Senegal in June 2025. Speaking about his decision, Walker said, “Playing for England has always been the greatest honour of my career. Every time I pulled on the shirt it meant a huge amount to me and my family. After a lot of thought, this feels like the right moment to step away and allow the next generation of players to come through. I leave incredibly proud of the journey and grateful to every manager, teammate and supporter who has been part of it.”

Walker’s wife, Annie Kilner, highlighted the pride the family felt in his international career, recalling the many moments they shared watching him represent England. England manager Thomas Tuchel also paid tribute, noting that Walker had played under four managers: Fabio Capello, Roy Hodgson, Gareth Southgate, and Tuchel himself. Tuchel added, “Kyle Walker can look back on an incredible international career. Fourteen years with the national team and five major tournaments show his dedication to the Three Lions.”

At club level, Walker currently plays for Burnley F.C., following a highly decorated spell with Manchester City F.C., where he won six Premier League titles and the UEFA Champions League among other trophies. With Walker’s retirement, England’s right-back position is expected to be contested by emerging stars including Reece James and Trent Alexander-Arnold as the team prepares for upcoming international competitions.

Walker’s departure marks the end of an era for England, leaving a model of professionalism, resilience, and dedication for the next generation of players.
