Drake is shaking things up with his style as winter approaches, but it’s only fueling more banter from Kendrick Lamar’s fans.
Over the weekend, the 6 God posted a moody selfie on his Instagram Stories, showing off a fresh new haircut—gone are the cornrows he’s been sporting since early 2022, replaced by a much shorter cut.
While it’s a return to a more classic look for Drake, it also seems to be inspired by one of his musical influences—a legendary R&B artist he’s often praised.
In a follow-up Instagram Story, the Toronto rapper shared a nostalgic photo of DeVanté Swing from Jodeci, sporting a similar hairstyle during his ’90s prime.
However, Drake’s tribute to the R&B icon didn’t do much to win over Kendrick Lamar’s die-hard fans. On social media, they wasted no time trolling the rapper for ditching his cornrows.
“‘What is it? The BRAIDS?’ Kendrick won, Drake cut them off,” one fan tweeted on X (formerly Twitter), referencing Kendrick’s jab in his diss track “Euphoria.”
Another user joked, “He got tired of us saying ‘what is it, the braids?’ [crying face emoji].”
Some fans even speculated that the new look might signal the upcoming release of Drake’s collaborative album with PARTYNEXTDOOR.
“Now that the braids are gone, it’s only a matter of time before Drake and PND drop the album,” one X post read. “NO BRAIDS = NEW ERA.”
Before the haircut, Drizzy had already made headlines with his long hair. Last year, when he let his cornrows loose and wore his afro in two side buns, complete with pink clips, fans couldn’t help but compare him to Minnie Mouse.
His most recent style—braided pigtails adorned with baby blue bows—earned him more flattering comparisons to none other than Snoop Dogg.
