Joey Barton has been arrested on suspicion of attacking a man, according to Merseyside Police. The former footballer and current podcaster, 43, was one of two men taken into custody after an incident near Huyton and Prescot Golf Club on Sunday evening.

Emergency services responded to reports of an assault on Fairway in Huyton at around 9pm. Police found a man with injuries to his face and ribs. He was taken to hospital for treatment while officers launched an investigation. Two men, aged 50 and 43, were arrested on suspicion of section 18 wounding. Local sources have confirmed that Barton is the younger man detained.

Barton is well known for his football career, making 269 Premier League appearances, including 130 for Manchester City. He later managed Bristol Rovers in League One before moving into media. Today, he hosts the “Common Sense with Joey Barton” podcast, where he discusses football, politics, cancel culture, and social issues.

Merseyside Police said: “We can confirm that two people have been arrested following reports of an assault in Huyton on Sunday 8 March. The victim was taken to hospital for assessment of injuries to his face and ribs. They are both currently in custody where they will be questioned by detectives. Enquiries are ongoing into the incident.”

The investigation is continuing, and authorities have not released further details. Barton’s arrest comes amid a continued public interest in his outspoken views and media presence.
