Israel Invades Southern Lebanon Amid Rising Hezbollah Clashes

Israel invades southern Lebanon as the Israel Defense Forces begin targeted ground operations in key areas near the border. The 91st Division has moved into positions in recent days to strike Hezbollah infrastructure and positions, according to military statements. The Israeli army says these operations are intended to reinforce its forward defensive line and prevent further attacks from across the border. Air raids have hit the strategic town of Khiam, as well as Yater, Burj Qalawiya, Sultaniya, Chaqra, Qantara, and as-Sawana. Casualty reports remain incomplete, but the strikes mark a sharp escalation in the region.

Khiam, long considered a Hezbollah stronghold, sits on elevated terrain a few kilometres from Israel and near the Litani River. Its position provides a commanding view over northern Israel and surrounding Lebanese areas, giving it significant strategic value in ongoing operations. Israeli forces say they are focused on dismantling militant infrastructure and targeting fighters operating near the border. Analysts note that controlling routes around Khiam could limit Hezbollah’s ability to move weapons and personnel south of the Litani and toward the Bekaa Valley, where the group maintains deep roots.

The escalation follows the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, which prompted Hezbollah to resume attacks on Israel after largely remaining quiet since a 2024 ceasefire brokered by the United States. Military observers suggest that Israel’s operations aim to cut off supply lines and restrict the movement of militants into southern Lebanon, a move that could reshape the security landscape along the border.

The conflict has already triggered a humanitarian emergency. More than 800,000 people have fled southern Lebanon following Israeli evacuation orders that also cover parts of Beirut. Reports indicate that at least 850 people have died from the strikes so far, including over 100 children and dozens of women. With regional tensions mounting, experts warn that the fighting could spread further across the Middle East if the current escalation continues unchecked.
